Wind Taking Ice Off Starvation
#1
I just want to caution everyone on the ice conditions at Starvation. Friday was a very windy day and then Saturday was a very nice calm but relatively warm day on Starvation. With the wind we had all day Sunday, last night and continuing today, I was curious to see what was happening to the ice so I went and took a look. The prevailing winds have been out of the west and southwest. There are currently several large areas of open water.

These areas include a large area under and south of the bridge, along the rock wall southeast of the bridge and along much of the west side shoreline.

Here is a shot of the shoreline north of the bridge.

I'm sure there are patches of open water up and down the entire reservoir but from what I see it is the worst along the shorelines and particularly the west shoreline. Once things calm down and things start to freeze up again, these areas will be very hazardous to unsuspecting anglers. So as always, please use caution. I think I will stay away for a while and go hit some other waters I've been wanting to fish. [Wink]

Hookngrinin, I was actually there fishing yesterday morning and that open water under the bridge was half that size. Pretty impressive how strong the wind is, even when the ice is 8-10 inches thick. The open water in front of the launch ramp was really getting chewed up and the pressure ridges towards the dam had huge upheavals of ice. Winds were ripping for sure, but the fish weren't. I only iced one 20-inch bow and a 12-inch perch. Ryno

Thanks for the warning and the photos. Two years ago there was a section of water in Rabbit Gulch that never froze. It was the best of both worlds. There were guys ice fishing and we were still able to float tube.[Wink]

I appreciate your report Ron. I was planning to go to Starvation on Wednesday. I think waiting a while is a no-brainer. I think Scofield is a better choice this week.
Keep us posted on Starvy, I do want to get back over there.

The winds have finally backed off and there is a lot of open water on the lake now. The area out from the beach and boat ramp over to near the dam is all open now across to the other side of the lake.

Here is a photo I took of the bridge area this morning.

Most of the lake in the area south of the bridge is wide open now.

Yippie! sounds like it's time to get the kick boat out of retirement. Thanks for the current picture. It's like having an advanced scout to let you know exactly what is going on. Thanks again. I'd hate to make the trip and find hard water. You really look foolish siting on the ice in your float tube.[Wink]
