Scofield Res. 1-15 and 1-16, 2014
#1
Due to unsafe ice conditions at Starvation, I fished Scofield on Wednesday and today. I fished in the area near the main state park boat ramp. Wednesday I fished near the wakeless bouys toward the far shoreline. I was in 15 feet of water and had steady action during the morning. Unfortunately most of the action was from 8 to 11 inch chubs. I now have enough bait to last several years. I also caught some small cutts and a few tigers. All of the trout were in the 11 to 16 inch range. I caught two small RBT that appeared to be recent arrivals.

Today I fished almost directly across the dam arm from the boat ramp. I used a spot a couple of guys cleared of snow yesterday. I heard the yelling and shouting as if they caught a nice trout. No such luck for me. Another chub fest today and I took home another 14 chubs to freeze for an eventual Flaming Gorge trip for macs and burbot.

There is about four inches of snow on the ice and it makes dragging a sled a little more difficult but at least the ice is covered and cleats are not needed now. The ice was at least 12 to 14 inches where I drilled my holes. Today I caught 17 trout. 9 cutts, 4 tigers, and 4 small rainbows. I was using small white tube jigs tipped with either a piece of chub or a piece of nightcrawler. The chubs were loving the worms so I downsized one rig and caught some intentionally to use for bait. If you can't beat 'em, kill 'em. A few of the chubs were about 5 to 6 inches. No wonder there are some monster tigers cruising that pond. I'm sure there's more big boys to come.

I sure hope Starvation gets back in winter condition so we can get back over there to pursue the perch and 'eyes.

Hey Mike it sounds like you did well on the trout and future bait. I usually feed the seagulls and pelicans with the chubs I get when fishing in my tube. I'm sure glad the tigers and cutthroats like to eat chubs because there are plenty of them in there. I'm sure there are going to be some more large tigers and cutthroats come out of there before the ice comes off. I just hope we get some more snow or we are going to be in big trouble at Scofield, along with a lot of other places.[:/]

By the looks of the hiway 40 camera the water is opening up more at Starvation. We are going to head over there next week with our kick boats and give it a try.

Great report! I'm glad someone is out there giving those fish some exercise.[Wink]

We went to Scofield on Friday the 17th, Ice is 13-16 inches thick, we tried parking our truck and wheeler trailer at the state park by the damn, about got stuck on the iced up roadway going out of the boat ramp. found a spot across the arm on the other side of the damn to park that was FREE, and had good wheeler access to the lake. Not many people fishing that day, maybe 20 on the whole lake, most fishing on the mouth of the arm to the damn, or in the arm. We choose to fish the inlet to the boy scout camp, had good success with yellow cricket jigs with orange stripe on the back and long tail and a white/blue glow lead head tipped with meal worms, in about 20ft of water (deeper than I wanted to be). Caught about 30 fish but nothing of any size, mostly 10-15 in. bows and cutts, skinny fish(released them all),NO chubs. Water got really murky around 2, so get there early!!!
