Fish finder/sonar for open water and ice fishing?
#1
Title pretty much sums it up. What brands can be used for both? Lowrance? Hummingbird? GArmin? Want one with a gps as well.

Yes, it's the DSI version. Really great for showing structure but only average showing fish. I bass fish so structure is what I look for to catch bass.

Probably not the answer you are looking for since you want one with GPS, but for others who are wondering and are on a budget - any fish-finder can do double duty on the ice. Just attach the transducer to the end of a long pole and wrap the cord around it and stick it down the ice hole. Works incredible well.

I have a Humminbird PiranhaMAX 220 that probably cost me about $100 brand-new. That model is discontinued, but the PiranhaMAX line is still in full swing and they are very cheap, but still offer enough power and sensitivity for the average fisherman. I have used it trolling 50ft deep and it can still pick up my lure just fine. I often have to turn the sensitivity down so it doesn't read my lure as a fish.

I also use a separate hand-held GPS device - which is certainly not as handy as having one built into the fish-finder, but works okay for me so far.

I do like those flasher-type sonar set-ups dedicated to ice-fishing/vertical jigging, but haven't felt strongly enough about it to purchase one yet.

Been using a Humminbird 597 ci HD in the boat and on the ice. Built in GPS. Has a flasher mode for ice fishing. Very happy with it year round.
