Because in the state of Idaho where Steelhead and rainbow are living in the same body of water they are considered one in the same to the state. If i remember correctly i think i actually read somewhere they are working on revising the steelhead/rainbow laws in the state.

Lurker turned member. You can view the article on this fish in the Idaho State Journal 5/7/13. Fish was caught by Richard Galloway of Franklin County Idaho in early march of last year. 36" long 28" girth. Search ISJ for Monster Rainbow. Thanks to all of you for your post. I'm headed to the Salmon for a couple of days. Will post when I return.

Any water where anadromous rainbow trout exist over 20-inches they are considered a steelhead - whether they ran to the ocean and back or not. FYI, and not to start any argument, but all steelhead are genetically rainbow trout, but not all rainbow trout are steelhead...[ ![]() Any way you slice it, that is one big pig bow!! Kelly. If you have ever fished the North Fork below Dworshak you have probably noticed how many kokanee wash through the dam and die or are injured. It's my guess that these 2 big rainbows and probably others keyed into them as a great food source and grew so well.

That IS such a fantastic fish, but I can't help but wince when I see the pic. I would be surprised if the fish didn't die from the way he held it, knowing he couldn't keep it. I can't imagine that not hurting the fish with how much it weighed! Amazing fish, just wish it were handled better.
