Need info on Tuna charters
#1
I would like to go out on a 6 pack tune charter. A group of us where I work have been talking about this. Does anyone have any recommendations? Ever been? What are the right questions? etc.

Thank You in advance for your help.

Talk with Garibaldi Charters out of Garibaldi Oregon (on the coast directly west of Portland). I recommend the first week in August. They take out a boat called the Norwester which is a fairly large boat (it holds 8-10 fishermen). Usually I prefer a smaller boat with less fishermen, but for tuna you are going off shore a long ways (20-40 miles) and the bigger boat is much more comfortable with a larger cabin. Siggi-G is also out of Garibaldi with a smaller boat if less people is your thing and you like riding on the deck soaking wet during the trip out. Both charters will get you on fish if they are in but I do prefer Garibaldi Charters. Have fun - it is a blast.

You'd have to wait until a little later in the season (Sept/Oct), but Bongos out of Newport Beach, Calif is a top notch outfit. I've fished Catalina with them and they are some of the best.
Out of San Diego, the Success (Point Loma Sportfishing) is another top notch boat. The company I work for runs a tuna charter with them every year. Downside for you is that they take 12 anglers. It's a smaller boat with 360 degree fishability, like the big boats, just a lot less folks. I might suggest you coordinate with another BFT group to make this one possible.

im from so cal and used to work on sportfishing boats down there. san diego is the place to go out of for tuna. september is usually the best month to go, the water is the warmest that time of year and the tuna are closer to shore and farther north then the rest of the year. the faster the boat the more time you will have in the prime area to fish and the farther south you will be able to go. kelp paddy yellowtail and dorado are also in the mix that time of year and in my opinion yellowtail fight better then tuna do especially albacore, and dorado like to jump when hooked and are beautiful fish.

I have been out of San Diego several times and I went out after Albacore last year with Garibaldi in Oregon.
They were all fun.

Do you have your own rod if you go out of San Diego? If not, you will need to rent one at the landing. Insist on a good one or they will try and give you some crud.
If you go out of San Diego, do at least a day and a half trip.
Garibaldi Charters furnishes the tackle for the Albacore trips and they will take you out about 30 or 40 miles, in fairly rough waters.
We had one of our guys fall prey to seasick, so take precautions.

I'm dreaming of the same type trip. Been watching Tradewinds charter out of Depoe Bay Oregon. They have one of the best fishing reports to watch on the web. I don't know if they are great or not, but they do provide a good fishing report that is fun to watch. They aren't terribly expensive, but I can't say how good they are. I went out with Sea Forth landing in San Diego last summer for sea bass and those guys know how to put you on the fish. They may not be the best for helping you, but if you know what to do they get you on the fish. Good luck and keep us informed of the trip it helps the rest of us plan things outside our usual comfort zone. Thanks J

I can recommend Dana Wharf down in Dana Point.

The guys up in Depoe Bay are great to work with as well if you ever get up there.

Here are couple videos from when I was in Oregon.

The fish tacos were delicious. [cool]

I use to go out if San Diego when I lived in California. Late summer is usually best but they are catching some big yellows right now. There's H&mlanding and Point Loma sport fishing right next to each other. There's another marina a but north of there but I can't think of the name. Also it will cost you a buy more to go later in the year but the fishing will be worth it.

I go two or three times every year July till late Oct. Wait tell you see the fish counts of over 100 fish per boat. I have been out on ten different boats, but like the Condor best.
