Well I have spent the better part of this week hitting as many lakes near Vernal as possible, and had a great time. Pelican is pretty good for bass right now. After all that fun my wife needed some fishing time as well, so we grabbed the boat and headed out this morning.
She had been thinking of going somewhere to target a yellow perch, as it was still not scratched off her to catch list, but after some thought just wanted to stay close and have some fun. We decided on Willard bay and thought we would try our hand at bottom bouncers, for the 6th time, and wouldn't you know the 6th time is the charm.
What a great day to be out, light breeze with good water temps, and all the boaters on the lake played nice. We started out with the bottom bouncers, and hooked up with some walleye early on. My wife landed 6 and kept a limit, while I only boated 2. It seems I need some new MONO line as I broke off two bottom bouncers with a light hook set. I only had 3 worm harness' so I let her keep fishing until she had her limit. Funny thing though, when she had 5 and wanted one more walleye she landed a 13 in yellow perch at Willard, so that takes care of one more fish on her list ! The last eye she brought in the boat was a nice 20 inch fish with some good fight in it.
After we had a decided to pick up the speed, and we ended up landing 4 wipers each. We kept a few for dinner and let most of the go. Yet again proving it was defiantly the wife's day to fish, she landed 2 pigs, one coming in at 22 inches but a full 4 pounds, and another just a bit smaller.
Our last stop was over near freeway bay, where I picked up a wiper here and a wiper there, but my wife had to show me up again
She picked up 2 Crappie both pretty good size. Those were another fish she had never hooked up with, so we were able to scratch one more off the list. Now she only has 14 more fish left to catch and has officially made it past the half way point towards catching every game fish in Utah.
After reading some of Tube Dudes post, I have decided the wife can be called Hoola_babe ! Thanks Tube Dude.
I wanted to end the past with a thank you to everyone on this forum who has been willing to give some advice on Willard, bottom bouncers, and walleye fishing. That is one species that I have struggled with. Man what a great day and we couldn't have done it without everyone's help.
