Hey Folks!
My wife and I were discussing our 4th of July Plans.
She wants to Hike. I want to Fish. Me, being the determined fisherman that I am, Came up with a compromise. What about a hike, to get to a fishing spot? She, being the loving, caring, wonderful woman that she is, agreed that this may be an excellent compromise for the plans.
I know that the Uintas are home to both good hiking and good fishing, but I haven't the darnedest clue where to begin.
I'm not asking for any of your Honey Holes, unless you're willing to share them via P.M. In which case, I'll treat your spot like I'd treat any of my own, But a couple suggestions on good hikes that end up at decent fishing would be much appreciated.
Species doesn't really matter, It would be fun to get Tiger, Brookie, Grayling or Golden Trout off my list -I just recently started keeping track. That said, advice on baits that may work better for one species or another would be wonderful too. (I have a fly rod that I'm not proficient with yet.. and by not proficient I mean I haven't landed a fish on it yet.. but I'd love to get that checked off my list too [sly])
Any information is much appreciated.

How far do you want to hike - 5 miles, 20 miles? Are you taking camp with you or is this a day hike in, fish and hike out?

She's not much of a camper, so it would be a hike in, fish, hike out day. We're not extreme hikers, so something that satisfies her need for a good hike without spending all of our fishing time doing it. I'd say something less than 5 miles might be the best bet. Preferably marked, or something that's clearly a trail, but I'm open to the idea of other options as well.

Trial, Washington and Crystal are all within a short walking distance. I know Washington has Rainbow, Tiger, Brook, Albino and Grayling. Golden you might have go much higher.

Look at the Grandaddy basin. Grandaddy Lake and Heart Lake are about 4 miles. Both have cutthroat. Betsy is just over the hill and has cutts as well. Mowhawk is another mile with some nice brookes. Also as the goddess said look at the Crystal Lake trail. Long Lake is 2 miles with brookes and Marjorie a mile or two farther with grayling. We find the hike in, fish, have lunch and hike out model works quite well.

Washington Sounds like it might be a good bet to cross a few off the list. Any suggestions on bait/lures/flies?
I do appreciate all the help. I'm excited to get out to the Uintas, I've been looking forward to heading up there for some time.

This sounds like it might be the perfect amount of hiking/fishing. Now its just a matter of picking which of the (thousands) lakes to try out, Or maybe even hit a couple! Haha, I might be getting ahead of myself, but I'm excited to get out and fish.
Thank you for the advice!

I can only answer on flies, and to keep it simple, woolly buggers always good, but Elk Hair Caddis, Griffith Gnat, Renegade, Bead Head Prince Nymph, Haresear.
Also Royal Wulff, Mosquito, Adams.

Other than the flies fly goddess suggested try spinners, red/white spoons (daredevil style), orange/white stripe spoon.

Spoons and Spinners will more than likely be what I hook my better half up with while I spend my time tangled up in fly line. With any luck she'll even out fish me!
I'll have to run over and see if I can grab those spoons and spinners from Wally-world. Working late most of this week makes it harder to get up to Cabelas or over to Sportsman.
Thanks Albino!

You will have diffuculty finding the orange and white unless you go with a different brand. I use the rainbow plastics brand (pot-o-gold). I usually find them at smith and edwards. Daredevil does make the red and white and there is another off brand for the red and white as well. Wally world does carry those.

I'll take you up on that offer! I'm hoping going on Friday Provides a little less traffic than the Saturday following. Even if its busy, at least then I'll have someone to ask how the fishing is and what's working instead of standing on that fine line between fishing and just being on the shore looking like an idiot. Gotcha, I'll see what I can (or can't) find at Wally World and then see if I can make another stop on the way back from that exotic location. hah.
Thank you. Hopefully I'll be able to show some pictures of the fishy friends I make over the weekend!

I can not vouch for any of the fishing on this hike but the hike is nice. Head up over notch pass on the Provo side of the Mirror Lake Highway. There are several lakes along the way, I have seen fish rising just never taken a rod with me. We use to do these for quick overnight trips. Easy hikes anywhere from 1 mile to 4-5 as far as I have gone in. The hike starts at the notch mountain trail head. Pretty close to the top.
