Sturgeon report now with videos and photos

[font "Calibri"]Some updated photos and videos from the recent sturgeon trip with Kent and Randy. In one of the videos (ie reeled in fish three times), I ended up bringing up the fish the first time to the side of the boat. We unhooked the fish right away but there was one loop of line around the fish. It decided to take off and got hooked in the side. I then turned on the video as I was reeling it up for the second time. Once again it decided to take off and give me a nice shower. Finally got it completely unhooked the third time around. It was a feisty fish. [/font]
[font "Calibri"]Randy’s broken reel fish was already mentioned. For those that didn’t read the previous post, his drag was still working but his handle would free spin so he had to hold the handle to use the drag. I had a bolt from his reel in my hand that happened to fall out. [/font]

Very nice...ha makes me embarrassed to post our TM videos. Made a few but like you can't figure out (guess I'm tech deficient) how to post video without link...

What is the rod/reel/line setup...and no I didn't look at first trip as videos capture my attention. Oh how we've learned even more with videos we've captured.

Someday maybe we'll venture that-a-way. Congrats looks like a very nice time with experience...

Out of the six main rods and reels we used, all were different. Kent and Randy use really long rods, they look around 9-10 feet but I am not sure on length. I use much shorter rods as you get more leverage with them making them more efficient for fighting fish. We also mainly use 80-100 pound powerpro or dacron, although my spinning reel which I caught the large one on has 65 pound powerpro. The spinning reel setup I have is harder to reel in the fish because it has a lighter rod but I hook up at least 5 to 1 compared to my other reel/rod setup. I always hope that my non spinning reel will get the fish, but it always seems to be the spinning setup. The reels are also different. Kent recently switched to one spinning reel and one open faced reel. I use big game reels (Kent also has one of these now) that I got for tuna fishing, but Randy uses smaller penn (I think) reels that are mainly geared toward small game ocean fishing. So it is all over the board.

The two main things that are probably most important on a reel are line capacity as Randy seems to get close to being spooled more often and the other is drag (you want a smooth drag with the capacity to put a lot of pounds of pressure on it). The rod you also want two features, the ability to detect light bites (light tip) and a heavy action (strong enough backbone to put pressure on the fish). Some of the longer rods often have both of these features where as many other shorter rods are too heavy in the tip to detect a bite.

Sorry Kory, not trying to high jack your thread, I just can not post a report until I get home because I can't down load the pics on my camera to my lap top[]. I was hoping Dale would upload him pics and video and I'm thankful he did but I can't even view it with this laptop[:|].
By the way, Dale uses 14 ft rods and it is truly amazing how much those rods can bend with those big fish, my shoulders are still sore from reeling them in.
