Just got back from my first fly fishing trip. I had the pleasure of being guided by Spencer from Elusive fly fishing. It was an amazing learning experience. I felt like Spencer knew his way around the gear, was confident enough to be able to teach and give advice on where and what to improve on for our casting techniques. By the end of the trip, both me and my dad started to feel like we were getting the hang of casting, Mending, stripping and all the other stuff you had no idea fly fisherman did beforehand.
Luckily for us, there weren't a whole ton of fish to distract us from the opportunity to learn from a guide.
We hit the river just before 7, There were caddis everywhere. but not a whole ton of fish rising for them. We used nymphs for a while and managed to catch a brown (Pictures to follow) and had a couple other missed hookups. (What's this, "set the hook downstream or across business? You mean I can't just yank the line any direction I want and have the hook get the fish?)
Fished for a few more hours and managed to land another brown.
It may not have been a very fishy morning, but it was time well spent.
Now if I could just drum up the money for some fly gear...
