Pigging Out
#1
Hit Porcupine today. Had to give it another try before the Red Hour begins. Calm morning, got on the water about 8 (not as early as I'd hoped for, typical) and wasn't long before I hooked up and landed my first fish. Then I lost my second one, grr. BUT - after that did pretty well and getting the net under them, even had a couple unbotton just in time to float back into the net - SCHWING!

Trolled around the first launch area, found a few, only lost two this time over the day, so I think my net-timing is improving a bit.

Mostly a calm sunny day, got a bit windy at times. Quite a number of other anglers in the morning, then the floaters came in for the mid-day afternoon. I guess there's some that don't know Porcupine is a wakeless lake. I think they got yelled at enough, they got the message though.

Few campers on the beach, jumpers on the cliffs, paddlers on the boards, a number of boats mulling around. Nice day out. Tried a few different dodgers and baits, but the pink-Epic's seemed to be the ticket. Was running deeper to follow the fish, 40-50 ft, some seemed right down hugging the bottom. Maybe they were browns. . . seemed pretty bunched though.

Got into a pretty good school along the cliffs so worked through that for a while. Didn't hook up as many overall this time, and if it weren't for the two early releases, would have had a limit. Had a few hits, and rigger releases that didn't produce fish.

Maybe they need a bigger sign with fresher paint. Used to be one by the fish-advisory sign, guess it got vandalized to oblivion. Figures.

Nice day on the water.

Nice report and pics John, thanks for sharing with us. Practice makes perfect when it comes to catching the kokes. Looks like some of them are already turning pick, I guess there is less than two weeks until it closes for the pink fish. How long was you largest fish?

Every time I read these pig reports I am painfully reminded of the one and only time I traveled up there. Couldn't get down to the water's edge for ice out due to being on crutches. Haven't been back since but these reports make me want to get a rematch!

Perhaps next year. The red season is upon us. Your next report might need to be named "pinky and the brain"!

Thanks Curt, you and Jason showed me some techniques, finally getting a chance to try them. Used to think Porky was far, but realize - it's not that much a drive for me, and a wakeless lake is a pleasure (usually). No wonder so many canoes, paddle boarders, and inflatable floaters come to play.
Getting pretty practiced at stacking the downrigger now - Thanks Jason - I keep reciting - 30 out, 10 down, then 60.... front to back, and just keep rolling! Sure love having an electric!

Oh, and note to self - get the net ready BEFORE starting fishing!

The cooler is 13 inches wide, so about that.

TDT - my first "launch" was a disaster, almost donated my Pilot to Davey Jone's locker! AND I got a skunk once I did get out. Better daze!

Petty - any time, well, actually not much of that left. I'm planning to head again next Saturday.
If I smoke a batch, sure I can "use them up" before then!
A little help from my friends.
