Rockin and Rolling Hyrum 11-29-14
#1
Well the wild wind howled all night so I started to give up on my only window to take my nephews fishing while they were up from So. Cal. But about 8:30 the wind dropped a little so we loaded up and drove to Hyrum dam and of coarse the wind was still roaring with white caps and my motors are still marginal so it took me a few to decide to launch, but by 10:15 we were out fishing. Went with my standby trolling squid and the leadcore pole was on fire. About as soon as we would get it out 60' the fish would hit. Our other poles didn't do as well, but we ended up doing pretty good for the conditions and time invested. We got a dozen fish in or at least to the net in two hours. We had a couple early releases due to inexperienced netters or fish that didn't close the deal, but we had 6 nice fish around 14-15" that we kept and some 12"ers we released. The motor heated up and quit on us for awhile so we tried casting while it cooled down. Didn't catch a thing, but as soon as we started trolling back it was game on. Wish the motor would have behaved better and we would have had at least 20, but it turned out to be a really fun day, glad we went. Water temp was 39 deg F so a little cold and we'll be in business on the hard deck. Air temp was 55 deg F. Wind was white cap level most of the day from the southwest. Still have the sea legs going on. Later J

Nothing like a successful day fishing even with the wind and the contankerous motor.

Yup it was good to catch some fish again. Been a little slow for me for a couple weeks. J

Now that's better than I did today! I went out on bear lake from sunup until 10:30 and got one whitefish and one rainbow (of all things to catch here, must have been a survivor from a few years ago planting)!
It wasn't blowing too hard, but since it was coming out of the north the waves were insane. Kinda got a little sea sick and that is rare for me!
Glad you were able to pull off a successful trip. Nice fish!

Mike, were you on the west side? Didn't see any boats on the east side this morning. Wind wasn't as bad as Saturday, but still had bad rollers by 10:45. Enough to drive me off.

Nice job on Hyrum Skunked Again!

Boy if those waves had that long of a fetch to grow I'll bet they were rough. That's one thing about small lakes in canyons at least the waves don't become man killers too often. Big Blue its a different story. Glad you survived and got a few. How big was the bow? Seems like I remember in the 80's there used to be nice bows in the lake. I remember having fun casting lures and catching some fun fish. Thanks for the update. J

Bow was 2 plus pounder. Jumped straight out of the water as soon as it was hooked. A few years ago I was pulling a few bows out during the white spawn, but last year I didn't catch any bows. Had to be a few year old fish from prior planting. Wish they would put more of those sterile bows in there.

Looks like someone is still a bit chill. Hope you got that boy some cocoa!

Sounds like some fun catching. So I guess there wasn't any ice yet [blush]

So is that like a pink squid you'd use at the pig? Were you running downriggers?
But what, no perch?

Crazy deal the wind wasn't really that cold except when you got your hands wet. And no ice yet.

The pink squid was the hot one. I was using a little spinner blade type on just mono long line when I caught mine. Tried the DR but nothing on it. Leadcore 60-75' seemed to be the right zone and best set up for that trip.

No perch, I didn't have any bait and still not very good at picking them up so none today just bows. Guess we need to try graphing some hot spots to start ice fishing with the lake at this level. It seemed a little strange to me, but the fish were more towards the center of the lake. I usually fish the edges, but maybe the wind did that too. Anyway got a few pole holders put together for the ice. Started working on a new bump board that will be big enough for my cats next summer. I'll have to post a picture when I get it finished. Do you have a BFT sticker I can put on it and my tote? We'll catch ya later J

Thanks Mike, do you think the East side will be better for the toon attack? I guess the wind may make that choice for us, but I hope we can get a chance to catch a few. Thanks for your updates. J

Hey Ralph, if you like that bump board wait till you see my new model now under construction. Going with a 1x12 base instead of 2x6 and also making it more of a troph to accommodate my kitties for next summers contest. (Their spikes are too wide to fit the old board) Current board got pretty trashed this year. My previous Walmart plastic model got trashed by fish and sunlight the year before. Plus you can't see the size in pictures on it, so I had to make one myself. This new one will be a sweet red neck on roids version, good to 48" fish, just in case. Ok, I know most of my trout will fit sideways but just in case.

I would be the fat fellow on the left in the picture. May see you this weekend at Bear Lake. However, my aunt just passed away, so I may have a funeral that will take presidense, but not sure when that will be yet. But if I can I'd like to hit the lake Friday or Saturday. Catch ya later J

It honestly surprised me, I didn't think we'd catch anything, so I was pleasantly surprised. I think if the motor would have kept running and we had more time it could have been a 40 fish day. Fun times. Later J
