After I left the reservoir, I was going to go to a larger river, but at the last minute I decided to hike into a small stream instead. With the thaw that is going on I figured I could get into the small stream now, but maybe not later in the year. The larger rivers are usually always accessible.
The fish aren't big, but they are fun!
The road up to the mouth of the canyon wasn't bad, but I didn't dare go up very far as I didn't have my truck this trip. My little Imprezza gets great mileage, but sits way too low to the ground for rutted snowy roads.
This stream is pretty low, but temperature wise it didn't feel as cold as some of the streams I was in last month.
It’s a pretty area, and it was nice to get out into the mountains, even if it was only a mile or so up. At least that makes for fewer people fishing.
I put on a dry caddis with a twenty incher (stonefly) dropper. Most fish hit the nymph, but I had a number of hits on the dry that I missed, but I did manage to catch a few fish on it. My largest fish of the day was on the dry too. I didn't get a picture of it as he was camera shy and left the photo session early.
Most of the fish were all the same approximate size. It must have been a good year class.
Just nice fun size on a 3wt rod.
I love small mountain streams!
