Because I missed the whitefish spawn. I was wondering if anybody targeted them through the ice or on a boat? I know there probably will not be any ice this year but Im just curious to know if someone does try and catch them during the winter months. BLFG, would you have any insight on this?
Thanks

Yes they do. I think he'll tell you to bounce a silver castmaster off the bottom with a bit of waxworm or crawler. Met him at about 50fow on the way out to the rockpile a couple years back, with a nice pile of fat whities.
I don't know that the spawn is over, think it may run for a bit yet. But I'm not the right guy to ask...

The spawn started early this year and was pretty well over as of Sunday when my wife and I went up. We might try it for them through the ice if we can find them, great question, I had never really thought to try.

[#0000FF]Early February...if there is ice...try fishing the rock pile. Jig for cisco until you have your limit and then send down a small spoon with a single salmon egg or bit of worm on the small treble. 1/4 oz. silver Kastmasters are a proven producer.
The ciscos not only spawn near the beach on the rocks but also over deeper rock structure...like the old rock pile or the newer manmade rock structures nearer the marina. Small Bear Lake whitefish and the larger Bonneville whites come in to slurp up the cisco eggs. Oh yeah, cutts and macks come in to feed on anything smaller than they are so you have the very real chance at one or more of them too.
Now if Mama Nature will breathe cold on the lake a bit to get the ice started.

I agree with what they are telling you... My previous whitefish catching was always done through the ice after the cisco spawn, we would fish in about 10 FOW off cisco beach and you could still see the bottom... Jig a little and a swarm of whitefish crowd around your lure, then you have to talk them into grabbing it... It was a total blast one of my favorite memories of fishing Bear Lake as a young man... only problem was I didn't know how tasty they were then, so we used to turn them lose waiting for trout... Hope we get ice to try that again, I'll take my young men's group for sure... Later J

Thanks all for the help and insight guys. Pat, I too am hoping we will get super cold the next few weeks. This heat wave we have experienced is putting me in a bad mood 😉. I want to get on some ice besides scofield, preferably a body of water with perch or walleyes. (My stock pile is all gone) But beggars can't be choosers.
