So had a beautiful day on ice. The fishing was great however the catching was not. We caught a half dozen snake cuts and maybe 15 chubs, none of which made it back to the water. Ice was 12-14 inches and no slush hard crusted snow making it fairly easy to move around.

Sounds like a decent day on the ice, how deep of water were you fishing in?

I have been to Scofield 4 times this year. The fishing has been good in terms of quantity every time but I have been disappointed in the quality of the fish. All fish have been small, 90% skinny cut throats and no tiger trout. I know the biggest rainbow caught in the tournament was not very big either. I only started fishing there last year so I am far from an expert but I had heard there are some bigger fish in the lake. Has anyone caught any big fish there's his year? How about rainbows or tiger trout?

They are in there, just hard to find. Here's a decent cut I caught a month ago.

That is a nice fish. Thanks for sharing. I keep going there thinking I am going to catch a tiger. Hopefully one of these days....

I wish the DWR would just call it and start over with Scofield. That lake was known for growing huge rainbows in a short amount of time. And the Cutts were large and thick. Even the 12"-18" Cutts were thick. The big fish in there are not controlling the chub population, but there are some trophy Tiger trout coming out of there so nothing is done. The thing is if they would start over we could have both a large Rainbow fishery, and still have trophy Tigers and Cutts (mabe more). That lake is a huge feed bed and we are using it to grow a bajilion chubs and a few trophy trout. Next time you pull skinny fish out of there ask yourself- Is this fish out competeing the chubs?

Been sayin' that for the last three years. They've missed two of their best chances to poison it the last two summers. The water level has been way down and it wouldn't take much rotenone to make a fresh start. They might not have a choice in the matter if we don't get some more snow.
You're right about the skinny fish not competing with the chubs.
I think the UDWR needs to hear from a few more people who are tired of seeing hundreds of reports of skinny fish with a decent one every now and then.

Last year, I thought that things might work out down there, with lots of fish available in the slot and a good chance at big slot busters. This year, it seems like there are fewer fish in the slot and the big fish are rarer too. I agree that the time has probably come to start over. I realize a few trophy guys are still getting some, but it seems everybody else is pretty disappointed.
Starting over will still allow the trophy guys to have big fish to go after. They will still need to have a slot limit on tigers and cutts to insure that the chubs dont return in force, but starting over will get the rainbow fishery back and all classes of anglers will be happy.
