The past few days I tested a new chirp technology Dragonfly fish finder from Raymarine. The chirp-based down imaging was awesome...The lake trout laying on the bottom were clearly identified as were trees, rocks, etc.. I had been leaning towards a Hummingbird Onix, but went Raymarine after seeing it and the lower price. Just something to consider before laying down that wad of cash. A bit harder to find, but I love it.

I wasn't aware they had a high end finder, I had seen their one that works with your phone but good to know there is more to the company. Let us know from time to time how you like it. Hope they will be a good durable unit. Good luck. J

I bought the lowrance elite 5 chirp ice machine this year. Got it out 3 times. I do notice a slight difference in target separation. I don't particularly care for the dsi, at least on the ice. This weekends project is to install the skimmer transducer on the boat so I can use it there too. I'm guessing both the chirp and dsi will be more noticeable on open water. Hope to find out soon. As far as ice goes, I would get a regular elite 5 and save a couple hundred bucks.

[left]I was talking to a former nave submarine sonar person and his comments were that Raymarine has shared/sold rights to their true chirp technology to Garmin. They use 3 waves of sonar and Lowrance's chirp only uses 2. The more waves(or what ever it is truly called) the better the detail. I'm looking at either Raymarine or Garmin for that reason. [fishin]

The Dragonfly has a huge transducer, but it really works well. I am returning to the gorge Friday to focus on setting new waypoints.

Just a note, Garmin owns Lowrance now. You will see a lot of similarities between the Garmin and Lowrance units. Don't believe they have decided which name will be their top of the line yet. One bad thing has been the change in Lowrance service. It used to be you could call and talk with a tech, send in a unit and get it repaired and back in less than a week. They would also send you small parts . No more, you send in a unit, AND if it is still a "current" model, then send you a replacement, otherwise you are out of luck. Really sucks if you have an older non-current model.

Well that doesn't sound good for the service, although I have used lowrance for about 20 years and never had to send one back yet. Hopefully that doesn't change. I'm still a little foggy on the whole chirp technology. I researched hard and never found a really good and short description of why it's different. My summarization I could come up with is it constantly changes frequency, instead of staying at one. I do notice a variable click on the ducer, instead of the consistent tap tap. If there's someone out there that can give some input about chirp technology, I would be interested.

I have the Raymarine Dragonfly and love it. I have used it at Pineview, Willard, Flaming Gorge and Powell. The detail is amazing. We worth the money and the upgrade from my Lowrance!

I just bought the Onix and I like it, I use it with my I pilot link.
but to get the chirp for the onix would cost over $2000.
this is a good site for chirp

Is the Garmin/Lowrance purchase a for sure thing? I could only find this on Lowrance's US website.
"The Lowrance brand is wholly owned by Navico, Inc. A privately held, international corporation, Navico is currently the world’s largest marine electronics company, and is the parent company to leading marine electronics brands: Lowrance, Simrad Yachting and B&G."
