auger blades

Now with all the talk of blade and such. I knwo it is easier to buy them and I also know dont hit them on the ice or get a rock. BUT. I have for year drilled my holes then drill my auger about half way in the ice. I do this for several reasons. 1. keeps the auger UP and out of the way. 2. since I almost always have my dog or sometimes my kids I dont want them to fall and hurt them selvs. 3. well I will be honest give me a good post to lean on [blush]

Now I have been told by some that this does no harm (and I have not noticed any) but I have had guys yell at me about this saying I am going to destroy my blades. and I dont see how it would. BUT I know the guys here know there stuf, so can you guys enlighten me and let me know if this IS bad and why.

[size 1]I always do that too. If nothing else, it makes a good coat rack if the temp warms up and you wanna keep extra layers up off the ice.[/size]

That is kinda why I do it keep people from tripping and yea a good coat rack or as I said a leaning pole.

I agree with you for all of your reasons and one more. I was at Strawberry and my auger was just laying on the ice near my friends hole. He was into a big cutt when he kicked the auger by mistake and cut his line, and lost the fish! Since then we have always drilled it in the ice after we are done with it.

Oh no! Never do that!

Not because it will damage your auger blades, but because its much more fun to be lazy. The idea of drilling half a hole just to have my auger stand up sounds like way too much work for me. []

I just put the cap on the blades, and set it on the ice or in the sled.

Now, if you have a power auger, thats another story. If you lay it down on itss side, you have your engine sitting in snow, plus run the risk of your as leaking out if you left the air valve open on accident.

Usually I move around, unless I am on the fish in the first hole. So I end up drilling a lot of holes. If I drilled a half hole here and there, I would get wore out. [crazy]

I have done this for years. Drilled a hole to store the auger in,for the exact same reasons mentioned above. I have yet to notice any problems. I see more problems with it laying on the ice. Safety bein the biggest reason.

[#000080][size 2]I always drill a half a hole to stand my "stealth auger" up. I use the cap for holding bait that I just prepared. Thursday at Jordanelle, I cut up one of the perchies and made long strips for jigs or small cubes for tipping ice flies.[cool][cool][/size][/#000080]
