Mantua 5/29
#1
Took the kayak north today looking for cleaner water than at Willard. Launched in a glass calm. Haven't seen Mantua that flat without ice.

Pedaled across to the knoll looking for bluegill and bass but couldn't buy one of either. Water was only 50° so maybe that was it. Gave up on those two and went trouting to avoid the skunk. Brought home two for the table.

Oh, escaped contact with Deputy Barney and heard bullfrogs. So that's three wins for the day.

Time for a martini.

Sounds like you only had to change up for the fish and had a positive day by not being introduced to "Barney". Good on you!

That really surprises me about the water temp. I was up in Idaho at two different lakes today and they were both in the 60s with bass just going onto beds. Weird.

It surprised me, too. I don't entirely trust my cheap digital Fahrenheit finder, but it seems to be right on re: air temp. And I did do a finger dangle to confirm. The water was quite cool. It read 47° in one or two places, warming to 50° by midday.

I chalk it up to a lot of cold rain. Mantua is full and there's a good amount of water still coming in.

I was actually surprised to see them so high up in Idaho since the rain has been so intense up north too. I had a foot+ of water in my yard in Clarkston after the storm on Memorial Day. All the reservoirs are pretty full in Idaho, and at least one is beyond full and up to the edge of the road. One reservoir I fished, Oneida, is a little murkier so it tends to warm a little more quickly. I was also up at Glendale, but I was fishing the inlet end up on the north east side in the shallows, so I'm sure it was much warmer than the main lake at the other end. I thought maybe my fish finder was off, but I saw a bass with its tail out of the water wallowing around, so that would be right on target for 65°.

We fished it all day Saturday and warmest spot was 54 degrees. We did just fair, caught a dozen bass. One real nice one, others 12-15 inch range. Lots of gills being caught by the worm chuckers from shore.
