Lessons learned

Lessons learned in on the last trip to Utah Lake.

1.Do not refreeze White bass meat a second time, it will just fall off the hook.

2. Catfish were not picky the other day.

3. There are a lot of fisherbugs around. This is a cross between a fisherman and a litter bug.

Headed down to UL Friday morning, pre 7 AM, for the rare longer than 1 hour trip. I live near the Pelican Bay harbor, so I regularly fish it for 30 to 60 minutes at a time, typically throwing jigs for White Bass.

With my few pieces of refrozen white bass, I quickly learned that refrozen WB does not really stay on the hook. After losing all but on piece while attempting to get it to stay on the hook, I finally got a tail piece to just hang onto the hook, and I set it down in the water about 3 feet from the jetty. Leaving it there to go in search of some more WB for bait. To my surprise, about 5 minutes later, as TB would put it, Bendo, after letting it free spool for a bit.

Good news, a 22 inch cat, bad news, no more bait, good news for the cat, she is still swimming.

Off to catch some more bait was not working out to well. Good news is I spotted 1.5 pieces of shrimp left in a bag by a fisherbug. Then a few feet later, a carcass of a WB that resembled Jerky more than fresh meat. It was better than what I so of I when to toss out some more bait.

By the time I got my jig pulled off my other rod, that had a swivel, Bendo for the second time. Not wanting to waste time, I simply attached the swivel directly to the eye of the hook, and put a chunk of shrimp on it. A short time later Bendo.

And so I continued for the next hour, hooking up 5-6 times, thankfully never a double, but that would have been interesting. All cats but one were in the 20-23 inch range, about a 50/50 split between males and females. About 9:30 it really slowed, and only caught one in the last 30 minutes, and was home by 10 AM. Although I did have several bobbers disappear for a split second. My guess is that that was a small fish that had grabbed a chunk of bait.

In the end. I once again ran out of bait, cleaned up some of the mess left by others. Cleaning the harbor jettties at Pelican bay would be a great service project for a group. With the low water, there is plenty to be done, from Fishing line, aluminum cans, bottles, worm containers. shoes, balls, plastic bags, you name it, it is there.

I might head down later this evening and give the night a shot. By the way it is hot outside in case you didn't notice.

Trust me I've seen the heat up close. 113-115 in Vegas. 105 south of flagstaff, etc...[Wink]

Sounds like a good time fishing to me.

Sometimes it seems like there is a "fisherbug hatch" going on at UL. Great report and way to nail 'em close to home!!
