Ferron Reservoir & Willow Lake Report & Pics.
#1
I fished Ferron this morning from 8:00 until 12:30 from my tube using fly gear. It has been three years since the DWR treated the reservoir to remove the stunted brookies and the other fish. The fish are starting to get some size to them now. Some of the brookies are approaching 17". I caught about 60% brookie (sterile) 30% rainbows (sterile) and 10% Colorado cutthroats (not sterile). I used a fast sinking line with size 6-10 bead head soft hackles and leech patterns in black/green, red/black, olive, and tan/green/pearl. I have fished Ferron twice this year and have not caught any tigers yet. The water temperature was 59 degrees and the visibility in the water was about 10'. This is a beautiful place to fish and a lot of folks camp out here. There were a lot of shore anglers during the day.

I drove down the road to Willow Lake and fished there from 1:00 until 3:00 and used the same tackle only using a slow sinking line, since the deepest water in Willow is about 8'. I picked up two small tigers and the rest were rainbows stocked this year. There was no one else fishing while I was there. There is also a small campground here. There is always a chance at picking up a decent tiger trout here.

Nice pics. I've been fishing everything around ferron just not it in the last month. If I'd known it has brooks I would've gone there! Looks like a good day.

Thanks.

It's nice to be able to catch brookies without having to worry about a couple of years down the road having them overpopulate and stunt. They are pretty fish and there are not many places around southeastern Utah that has them.

Great looking pics. Thanks for sharing! As I spread my wings out from my weekly temporary home in Grand Junction I will need to find some ponds similar to this.

You should be able to find some up on the Grand Mesa. Just remember your bug off. The last time I was up there the mosquitoes were pretty bad.
Happy searching. It's always fun to hit some new water.

Yeah I figure 2 hours drive is enough to get out and find places.

Fun to read your report, especially since we generally camp up there at least once every year. Glad the bigger brookies are taking off, the brookies were always so tiny in Ferron. I'll bet Willow was windy.

Thanks.

That area has some great camping, both in campgrounds and dispersed camping.

Your right about Willow. The only time the breeze stops up there is when it's changing directions.[Wink]
