Got a chance to hit Deer Creek with my good friend, Rick Johnson, on Thursday afternoon. Rick is one of the best fisherman I know. He is the one that introduced me to Tube Dude many, many years ago. We went up with the intent of shaking the the Big Red Skeeter down in prep for a tournament we are going to fish in a couple of weeks. We also needed to exercise our casting arms as they have been idle for some time.
Got launched and headed to the North end to start the day. We were swimming grubs and tubes on the flat, in 6-8 ft of water. Had a few hits from uneducated fish, they did not know how to hold on very well. I was first to score, a nice 14 inch walleye on a 5 inch Kalin grub, 3/16 ounce head. That was the beginning. Over the next hour and a half, we caught a total of 10 walleye, keeping 7, 3 were to small.
Since we were trying to hone our bass fishing skills, we left the walleye and began to search for SMB. They were difficult to find, but we did score a few in various spots. Had to down size to a small 2 1/2 inch tube on a 1/16 oz hd to get it to spiral down.
We fished till about 7 and called it a day.
I decided to go back up on Friday, the bite was to good to pass up. Unfortunately I slipped off the trailer rail as I was launching, hyper extending my new knee ( had it replaced a year ago !!) That ended my day abruptly and my plan to get some pics to go along with this post.
Hopefully I didn't do any permanent damage, but will be on crutches for a time and will have to see the Dr. on Monday.
This was a really solid bite, slow swimming the grub on the flats. Again, I was using a 3/16ths head, 5 inch grub, somke w/grn and blk flake. Rick was using white. Just move slow and fan cast, swim it back with a slow steady retrieve. The fish were not subtle, but did not really whack it, but there was a definite hit.
Sorry about no pics.
