Lincoln Beach Modest Monday 8-24-15
#1
[#0000FF]TubeBabe had a break from her "Galloping Grammy" life...and Monday looked like a decent weather forecast...so we hit Lincoln Beach. Launched about 7ish...right after BLK came creeping out of the harbor with his motor tilted up. And he had no grandkids in the boat with him.

After exchanging game plans on the walkie talkies BLK headed out to the area between shore and the island. TubeBabe and I stayed closer to Lincoln Point.

Water temp was 72 at launch and 74 when we came in before noon. Kinda greenish but not much clarity. Should be good for walleyes if the water cools down a few more degrees.

BLK reported his first fish...about a 26 incher. Then TubeBabe scored a 2 footer. Took me a while but I finally chased off the skunk with a legal age (over 21) myself.

The fish were scattered and skittish. Multiple "pop and drop" inquiries for all of us. But we all caught fish enough to maintain grins. BLK caught the most, but he fished half of Utah Lake in his boat. TubeBabe and I stayed in a more confined area but we each kept 3 "smokitties"...between 21 and 24 inches.

We got bites in water from 4' to almost 7' deep. Best depth for me was right about 6 feet. BLK did his best work on white bass...whole or half. We joked about some of his cats being "half bassed". TubeBabe and I used either carp cutlets or some pieces of leftover sea bass fillets that were past prime. Carp worked best for me. I had a couple of good hits on the "aged" bass but they didn't hang around to join me. TubeBabe did get a couple on it though.

The smoke and haze was still thick enough to hide the hills across the lake. But not as bad as it has been. Hoping for some water, cooler temps and clear air soon.

Sounds like a lot more fun than I had at work today. Nice to see the smoke clearing been an ugly weekend up north. Thanks for the report. J

Good day on the water today... always fun to fish with TD and his better half. I thought I was thru with the boat on UL but after watching multiple ski boats launch Sat. I decided to give it another try. No problems launching or loading. Water in the channel is less than 1.5 feet but with my prop lifted up and going slow I never even kicked up any mud. I'll keep at it until I end up wedged in the channel mud and unable to get out.

Good fishin' today. I saw lots of red bumps on my sonar that were bottom huggers and most likely cats. I had lots of "pop and drops" too but also a couple of rip-your-fingers-off bites. I probably caught about 10 cats with the biggest a 26 in. female and the smallest a 12 incher.[shocked]

I was using whole 6-7 in. white bass for bait --big bait to catch big fish. I had lots of fish hit my baits from behind and they were missing my second hook. Tube Dude radioed something to me that sounded like "half bassed" or similar... I was offended at first but then realized he was suggesting I use 1/2 of a bass instead of a whole bass. I did. It helped. I put my first hook thru the eyes and the surprise hook about 4 inches back and then cut the back half of the bass off. Catch rate picked right up.

I lost a good one at the boat... a big blue cat that decided to spit a sloppy wb back at me when we made eye contact. I never got a good look at him so he was at least a 3 footer.

Was good to finally begin to see the mountains again with the diminishing smoke... then I got home and the mountain near my home was on fire.(Santaquin Canyon)

We need a nice windy and wet cold front to move thru to drop the temps. Hoping to get my crew out again on Labor Day weekend??

[#0000FF]Glad you could share the water with us again. Also glad you got new batteries for your walkie talkie...so we could understand you when you growled something over the airwaves.

That "half bassed" approach works even better than using a whole baby bass at times...even when using the smaller ones. I usually put some knife cuts along the sides on the whole ones...to release more flavor...but cutting them in half can work just as well. I use both halves. But then I always have to make the choice..."heads or tails". It may be the eyes but I usually do better with the upper part.

Enjoy the launching while it lasts. You will be in your toon soon enough.

[#0000FF]I'd dearly love to meet up with you while you're here. But it won't likely be on Da Berry. Haven't wet a line in that trout pond for over 30 years. Too many other places with "decent" fish.

Seriously, October is when I do some of my most serious non-trout fishing. There's gotta be some place we can get together.

Let us know as far in advance as possible and I'm sure some of us will be able to provide guide service to the venue of your choice.

OK Pat. Once some dates firm up I would love to catch up. I will be travelling light obviously so will need to sponge some gear.

I will be guided by you as far as spots go, preferably very fishy ones [Tongue].....

I will stay in touch mate.

[#0000FF]Hopefully we still have some lakes with water left in them by the time you get here.

Of course we can get you properly set up tacklewise.

Might even put you in a float tube.
