Breakdown of boat registration fees

I have, and decided after getting one of my boat's renewal form to find out just why the fee increased $15.75 over last year’s fee.[/#800000][/font]

[font "Comic Sans MS"][#800000]The boat in question is a 12 ft aluminum jon boat registered in Weber County. Your fee may be different based on county and boat length. But here goes.[/#800000][/font]

[font "Comic Sans MS"][#800000]Last year the total fee was $27.75 and this year it was $53.50. This year’s fee breaks down to this:[/#800000][/font]

[font "Comic Sans MS"][#800000]1. Weber County gets $10 based on a table that lists my boat. Same as last year.[/#800000][/font]

[font "Comic Sans MS"][#800000]2. Parks & Rec gets $25.00 - $4.00 that goes to the DMV for actually handling the registration process for the Parks & Rec. The DMV used to get $2.00 but recently increased it to $4.00.[/#800000][/font]

[font "Comic Sans MS"][#800000]3. DMV adds a $3.00 charge for something the DMV agent called an electronic fee. I really don’t know just exactly what this fee is used for and neither did the DMV agent I talked to. [/#800000][/font]

[font "Comic Sans MS"][#800000]4. The remaining $0.50 goes towards Search & Rescue expenses; whatever they are.[/#800000][/font]

Our illustrious State Legislature passed a bill this past session that went into effect on July 1, 2015 wherein every resident, registered watercraft shall pay a $10.00 fee for the Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) problem we are facing in Utah and throughout the West.[/#800000][/font]

The last $5.00 is an additional fee being levied by Parks & Rec which decided through their governing board that the increase of from $2.00 to $4.00 by the DMV did not leave the Parks & Rec agency enough funding to successfully manage their agency within budget. And please do NOT ask me why they didn’t just add it to the $25.00 - $4.00 they get from the DMV.[/#800000][/font]

[font "Comic Sans MS"][#800000]So there you have it. The Parks & Rec get $26.00, the DMV gets $7.00, Search & Rescue get $0.50, the AIS Program gets $10, and the County gets $10 for a total of $53.50.[/#800000][/font]

[font "Comic Sans MS"][#800000]Your boat fee will be $43.50 plus whatever your county charges you based on which table your boat falls under and how long it is. If you have not renewed your boat this year, you now know it will cost you $15.75 more than it did last year unless it’s age made it slip down the table to the next lower age grouping.[/#800000][/font]

IMO utah boatig registration is too much for my boat. I have a 12 foot inflatable boat that I'll be putting a 2.5hp trolling motor on and it's going to cost me $59 to register it. Even if I put an electric trolling motor on a pontoon I'm still needing to pay that much. To me that's just too much especially when wyoming only charges $15 a year to register a boat. That's why I'm looking into registering my boat there.

I don't mind money being collected for the fight against invasive mussles.
I do mind the financial burden of the fight resting solely on the shoulders of only water recreationists that have a motor attached to their watercraft.
Why are not tubers, canoers, pontooners, kayakers, sailboaters, paddleboaders, windsurfers, scuba divers, swimmers, snorkelers, ( you get my drift, basically anyone who enters a water) etc., also responsible to share costs to fight this good fight?
I would much rather see entry fees for EVERYONE go up a dollar than to ding us motorboaters the ten frogskins.

Talked to like 3 different dmv agents on the phone told me the same price. Might be a little more expensive here in sat lake country.

Every County gets the same amount of money. I firmly believe that the agents you talked to on the phone are keying in on the 'inflatable' and using the 'Collapsible Inflatable Vessel' table and the minimum fee from that table is $15. However, to use that table, the vessel must be at least 15 ft long. Yours is clearly not.[/#800000][/font]

If your boat is registered out of state it can only stay in the state 30 days.

That used to be pretty easy to get around,,, but now with the mussel inspections
you will need to show that it was inspected or cleaned at the border crossing with in the time frame you are claiming.

That makes keeping an out of state boat in Utah much harder.

At the dmv right now to get the boat registered. Gave up the idea of registering it at wyoming since I want to use the boat this weekend. I'll try to get the breakdown of it. Oh one thing I didn't mention is that this inflatable hasn't been registered or titled before.

Also, any non-resident coming from Idaho, Wyoming, Arizona, Nevada, etc., and using Utah waters don't pay anything either. Wyoming charges us $35 for a sticker for each and every watercraft we take there and use.[/#800000][/font]

I have been licensing Multi boats as well, but keep in mind, many do not. They will license on and use it on several.
I licensed all mine in April and it was $37.50 each. EVEN a 14' inflatable drift boat.
I know there was talk of increasing that fee for Invasive Species, but I guess I beat it this year.
I even understand having to pay that fee for each boat, however it is a little crazy as I can only use one at a time.
Idahoans pay for the Invasive with their licenses, but us outastaters are paying $30 per boat. Utah needs to cut that price a bit, put it on fishing licenses, and separate charge for out of staters. Fair is fair, but it also make more sense in that even waders can transfer the species, not just motors.
