The Berry ... Several Techniques ... Lots of fish ... 9/11/2015

[#800000]My original invitees got sick and could not join me. I was having some trouble finding someone to take their place so I almost called off my Berry trip today. But at the last minute, I got a call from mtncat1 (Rich H.) and after a little planning, we decided to give it a go.[/#800000]

[#800000]For a change, I got some decent sleep (7 hrs.) before leaving this morning. We got setup and started vertical jigging tube jigs tipped with chub at around 8:00 (about an hour and a half later than my normal).[/#800000]

[#800000]We started out around the Nollls but only boated 5 slot cuts in the first hour so we decided to go see if we could find some better action elsewhere. We went down north of Mud Creek and started getting some better action there. [/#800000]

[#800000]For some reason, that we couldn't quite figure out, the trout were busy slurping the surface of the water … lots of rises all over the place in 20 feet of water out to 50 feet. We casted crank baits (Lucky Craft Pointers and the like) and were catching fish about every other cast. Casting our tube jigs worked well too. The slurping ended around 11:00 and so we went back to vertical jigging and drifting and did quite well.[/#800000]

[#800000]The water was quite clear today.[/#800000]

[#800000]We caught fish vertical jigging, drifting tubes, casting tubes, dog walking crank baits, slow retrieving crank baits and fast retrieves. It was nice to be able to catch fish using so many different techniques.[/#800000]

[#800000]At about 3:00, just before we left, we watched lots of beautiful big red kokes porpusing out along the west bank. It was cool to watch.[/#800000]

[#800000]Just when I thought we had run out of bait, I seen a very small minnow in the bottom of the chub baggie. The tiny minnow was half the size of the smallest piece of chub in the bag. I stuck it on as a last resort before leaving and instantly hooked this nice 25" slot buster ... my fourth and best buster in 3 weeks. The picture just didn't do it justice:[/#800000]

[#800000]Rich put on rainbow crank bait and landed the last two fish for the day and we left.[/#800000]

[#800000]We caught around 30 fish each. The weather was fantastic and the company even better. Wow, what a great finale to the summer fishing.[/#800000]

Thank you for the post. I like when people will help others catch fish. I tried over Labor Day but with the wind and a 9 year old co. Pilot I got off the water sooner than I wanted. Some day I'll have a 20-30 fish day.

Glad to hear that you got into them I was up there also I think I launched the same time as you. I thought I recognized you from your posts was going to come say hello but it was a little to hectic at the boat ramp. I also had about the same luck as you did using the same techniques it was a fun day of fishing.

Nice report. Just curious, Old Coot, do you fish out of a Gregor boat? From a distance, I briefly chatted with a couple of gentleman in a Gregor boat just North of Mud Creek on Friday morning.

Well L&L, what a small world! Yes, that was us in the Gregor. That was you in that sweet little Klamath? I quite enjoyed our short little chat. And, I dig your hat.

Did you guys notice all the surface slurping those trout were doing there?

I did not read your post, If I had I would not have gone by the Knolls today,
two weeks ago I was catching big cuts and the fish were all over my fishfinder. today (Sat) fished by the knolls, we stayed there way to long, no fish on the fishfinder, so they must have moved west..

thanks again for letting me go with you and for teaching me about jigging the berry ( I may be hooked) [cool] I think your being to modest on that big fish it looked to me to be 26 to 28 inches and around 10 lbs. and it barely fit in the net! we will never know, that fish was so mean and healthy when Ralph went to put it on the measuring trough it flipped out and went straight to the bottom. what a beautiful day with a great fisherman, I'd love to get out with you again. ive been so lucky to make new friends ,try a bunch of new lakes and new techniques ,all because of this forum . thank to all I'm a lucky duck [Smile]

Coot & mtncat- Yes that was us in the Klamath. Now I wish I would have come over and chatted with you fellas a bit more, I just didn't wanna get in your way.

Yes, right up until about 11am or so, there were large numbers of fish slurping on the waters' surface. Just before and after chatting with you guys, we were drifting and casting and caught several by sight casting -- see a fish surface and then cast just in front of the fish. The water clarity was so good, you could often times see those fish hit the lure. We had a great day, much like you guys did. We didn't catch as many fish as you or any as big as the one in your picture, but we did catch 3 cutts that were just above the slot limit. All cutts for us yesterday, not a single rainbow to be had.

Thanks for the hat compliment! My buddies tell me they recognize me on the water from the hat more so than the boat. I'd say my hat looks much like the one on the fella in your avatar picture!

The weather was perfect, couldn't have asked for a better day.

Glad we bumped into you fellas and glad to hear you had such a good day!
