Dodging elk, deer and rabbits on our way to Lost creek on 911
#1
Wiperslayer and I hit Lost creek yesterday, from 7:30 am till 2 pm. The catching was slow, we boated a dozen or so rainbows and cutt, trolling and jigging. Even caught a chub while trolling but the main excitement for the day was the drive in. The first thing was a nice bull elk and his harem of cows and calfs. They were less that 10 yds off the rode[shocked], it was amazing seeing those big animals up so close. Then as we drove on down the road we started dodging deer and rabbits, it was totally amazing the numbers of deer we saw, they were everywhere and the rabbits were running in front of us, even between the tires, totally shocked we did not run over a few. I'm surprised we did not see and turkeys, I guess all the elk, deer and rabbits scared them away[Wink]. Wish I had been able to get a few pics of those elk but I did not get one pic for the day. Water level was the same as last Fall. Saw WiperMac and his fishing buddy as were were launching, hope they ended the day doing better than we did. Nothing was over 17 inches and we caught them on the Epic lure and small black back/gold sided Rapala. Also caught them on a variety of other small lures. We used 4" white jigs and salt and pepper tube jigs while jigging. Good luck if you get up there, sure is a beautiful area but I wish the road was better.

Its not always the catching fish that makes fishing so enjoyable .....the other wildlife and scenery we have in utah is amazing!

That is one narrow and rough road up there. Not a lot of space to swerve out of the way.

Thanks for the report.

I fished there a week ago in my tube and also had slow fishing. I caught small rainbows, from 10" - 14" long, one 19" cutthroat, and four 10" chubs. It's a great place for a tube with the wakeless speed for boats.

That road, along with all the wildlife, is an adventure. They don't need any speed limit signs along that road because you don't dare go over 30 mph for all the potholes. I feel sorry for you guys that take boats up there. It has got to be hard on them.

Looks like you did better than we did, nice pics. If the road was better, I'd likely fish it more but it really limits how many times I get up there every year with the boat.

Sounds like you could have quit after the drive in and called it a good day. A few playful fish was just a bonus to a fantastic morning.

Yea, I totally agree, now I need to go up and ask a land owner if I can rabbit hunt on their land, looks like it is going to be a great year for bunnies[Wink]. On another note, I noticed Desert L&L is buying up more land up there, signs all along the road as you go in, just past that last farm house on the West side of the road. Looks like they also bought that place right before the Dam on the West side, I think it was a hunting property with a ranch house.

DLL purchased the Hell Canyon CWMU property about 6 months ago and now owns about 95% of the land surrounding LC reservoir and a couple miles down the canyon.

I get up on the ranch every couple weeks in the fall and I can say that I have not seen this many deer in my lifetime of 40+ years. Going to be a good hunting year. And the rabbits must be on a boom because they are everywhere.
I totally recommend getting up there if you get the chance, they have some great fishing opportunities too.

What ranch are you referring to, the one at Hells canyon or Desert? And where are you recommending fishing, Lost Creek or some other location on Desert? I knew all those Desert L&L signs were not there last year. That is a huge piece of property they bought. Do these outfitters allow people to hunt rabbits on their land or is it just for clients? Thanks for the info.

Hells Canyon is now DLL for all intents and purposes. I do not think they would allow rabbit hunting on their property. I recommend checking out the fishing on the ranch through the outfitters link I posted. There are some monster trout on the interior of the ranch in their ponds. I am not sure what they charge, but take a look at their videos and pictures and you can see the caliber of fish they have.

Oh, I did not know the Hell Canyon part had trout ponds, thanks for the info. I bet it's not cheap to fish there[:/].

Man, I just find rabbits running around where I am not allowed to chase them just irritating. Sad

If anybody knows any other decent spots I could take my nephew from Texas this fall, I'd love to hear about it. He has never hunted, and wants to just start small.
