If I'm going for panfish I like 2- 3# test for trout 3# or 4#. I've heard that 'ice' line is just a marketing thing and that there isnt anything different from what you'd use in the summer time, I dont know how true that is, but I'm a sucker for anything ice fishing haha... I like the berkley mono ice line. One line I tried a few years ago was the Celsius brand and I hated it, it would jump of my reel like crazy and get tangled.

Regular old Berkley Trilene XL in 4 and 6 lb. has served me well for over 3 decades of ice fishing. I also like 2 lb test so I tried some P-Line CXX mono and it worked very nice. Last year I tried Northlands Bionic Ice mono in 3 lb and it was a nice bridge between 2 and 4 lb test. and it performed very well on 20"+ trout, bass to 17" and bluegills. No knot failure, low visibility and it was limp allowing for excellent lure action. I'll keep using this brand. I've never seen any major advantages/diSadvantages in fluoro vs. mono in my ice fishing. Buy some less expensive 75 - 100 yd spools and see which one you like best.

I've tried three kinds of ice line. The far and away best is Trilene Micro Ice. I have the 4# green one on my reels now. It stays limp, is visible against the ice, and most of all does not seem to gather ice like regular mono. No clogged up tip guides. I don't know how they do that, but it's fabulous.

I agree...the Micro Ice has served me well. I've tried other lines and the Micro Ice is the best all around line I've used.

I had to call in sick so I could go to Lake Powell!

Google "Vicious Panfish". Get the high visibility line. Thank me later.

I fell in love with fluoro bass fishing plastics this year. Just spooled up my inlines for the first time to give it a try through the hard deck.

I gotta admit, every year I just change my light and ultralight reels over from my panfish rods to my ice rods, so I use the same line year round. But a few years ago I, too, spooled up one of my cheap reels (only kind I own, unfortunately) with the Micro Ice (I think) in the red color, and it definitely acts different. I lost or broke the reel, eventually.

Being able to see it against the ice saves a lot of time and tangles. It is very sensitive to light bites, and it knots better and stays put. I wouldn't say NO ice build up in the guides, but it really helps, and it won't freeze into the spool much, either.

I should clarify my "no ice" comment. I still see a bit of ice in the rod guides with Micro Ice, but no chunks on the line itself. With mono, there's always that ball of ice that forms where the line enters the water - and then jams against the tip guide when you reel in. The doesn't happen with Micro Ice.

I have always used 8# fluorocarbon and put up with the chunk of ice on my line. I might have to spool up that Micro Ice on a reel and give it a try - thanks for the tip.

Second tip:

I tie a snap swivel to the end of the Micro-Ice. And I pre-tie all of my two-jig, spoon and ice-fly, etc terminal rigs on two feet of fluoro. I store each one in a zip-loc bag. On the ice, I simply snap the rig on and bait up. No knots to tie, no time wasted, no loose hooks dangling from the rod when I pack up to leave.

Now that is one of the best ideas I have heard in a long time. Love the swivel idea and tying up the rigs. Thanks for sharing.,

Micro ice is our hard deck line of choice. We also will also reverse the line each year to ensure all the line is used several seasons. Why cause we are CHEAP = Cash Happy Economically Aware People. Why always put new line each season when a vast majority of the line is still new. Haven't bought any line for several years...for any of our reels...

The 110-yard spool of Micro Ice is about four bucks. That's enough for three reels, over some mono backing.

I have always said that Utahns are so cheap they won't take something for free unless there's a cash rebate. I vote k2muskie as cheapie champ, LOL!
