Sheep Creek Marina / Bay
#1
I shore fished here this evening (see picture attached). I saw one fish about a foot long follow my crawfish lure, but caught none. I also tried a spinner and medium and large swimbaits.

I'm staying overnight and will likely fish Sunday.

There were several shore fishermen near the mouth of Sheep Creek -- enough right there to suppose they were having success.

Advice invited.

I briefly saw one of us pull his boat out. His comments: "cold."

I'm looking forward to ice fishing around here and trying out new gear I bought for last season which was over soon after it started.

Regarding: cold and thinking about ice fishing and more on gear to make it enjoyable.

The fishing was just near freezing, but a beautiful blue sky and sunny late afternoon with no wind and water was like a sheet of glass as you can see in the picture of my above post. Polarized prescription eyeglasses in brown tint allowed me to see the fish following my lure and it will be great for the glare of the sun on ice coming soon.

I say no wind, but that was shore fishing while our cold friend created his own wind boating. I was testing new clothing. My boots with wool socks kept my feet sturdy, warm and dry, being Gore TeX and breathable, even stepping into the water edges some. I've already tested them ice fishing and traction was fine even pulling a sled uphill. I wore thermal underwear or base layer (Can anyone tell me why it's camouflage?) with a fleece top and layered with a larger size hooded top. That and the pants were quality hunting clothes I tested for the first time. I was warm and comfortable with core body heat sufficient to not need gloves. I want my hands to acclimate to cold for good circulation for ice fishing with often pulling off gloves.

For ice fishing, I have a variety of clothes in multiple sizes for comfortable layering for not only changing conditions, but as my activity level changes from hauling and running around augering holes and locating structure and schooling fish to sitting still while fishing in the cold. I've also noticed a big difference with change from sun to moments the sun is blocked by a cloud.

Choose full zippers over pullovers. I especially like down vests with snaps. I can layer large, extra large and 2XL without uncomfortable bulk on my arms.

I haven't tried my new ice fishing tent yet though I had it with me ice fishing twice already. Mainly I have clothing to be comfortable in mostly any conditions and prefer that. But, I have the tent mainly to be able to invite friends and have them be comfortable.

Besides, I might want the tent for very windy or snowy conditions and I'm thinking about night fishing and sleeping out on the ice. I also want to try it for blocking the brightness of a sunny day to better see my fish finder screen and see fish through the hole and perhaps through clear ice, if I ever get to experience that.

I fished here this morning with no wind at all and the water a reflective mirror. I met Dave from BFT. He caught a nice rainbow.

Sheep Creek bay can be a great place to catch some nice fish. I've done well from both shore and float tube catching nice rainbows and pup macks. I've also blanked a number of times. I would imagine the mouth of Sheep Creek to be drawing rainbows for a fall spawn and/or for kokanee salmon eggs, maybe even salmon flesh washing downstream. We've done well there on tube jigs, spinners, spoons and floating crawlers. As for ice fishing -- safe ice isn't common in Sheep Creek bay. You normally have to go into Wyoming to find good ice conditions at the Gorge.

As for your camo underwear -- don't you feel more manly in camo? The company probably charged you and extra 10% for the camo pattern.
