Mantua
#1
I drove up to Mantua yesterday (12/ 26) 10:00 to get an idea of the ice. I did not get on it but the ice must be good because there were 90 vehicles parked on the south side and 9 on the west by the restroom. Have no idea how many parked on the north east or the north west.

I only talked to one out of a foursome and they hadn't caught anything. Glassing the area I could see many a folk walking around or drilling new holes which indicates to me they are not finding fish.

I know the fish are there. Maybe in the middle of the week I slip up and try it.

OH! A couple were pushing their luck parking between the no parking signs. You can bet that Barny will remind them if he drives that way.

Thanks for the report Richard, was the slush all frozen tight now? Sounds like the crowds have arrived. Guess I'm back to work tomorrow so be a few days before I get out and I'm sure ready to try it. Later J

From what I could see there wasn't any slush. I was watching the edges more than anything and they appered to be tight.

I was up there on Saturday on the southeast end. The slush was frozen and the fishing was slow. We fished for 3 hours and had 3 bites and iced one 15" trout. We were using white and green tube jigs tipped with a meal worm. We tried power bait but not even a hit on that. There was no wind and other than the lack of bites, it was awesome.

Boy this is really unusual for early Mantua. Thanks for making it easier on me since I can't go yet. I'm hoping I can get out by the weekend. Thanks again for the report. J

I have heard a plow had blocked the road off that goes all the way around the North side of the lake with snow, is that still plugged or did they open it up?

Well, had to try it so I took my grandson (who is much stronger than I) so he could pull the sled. Thats fair if I furnish everything needed to fish; isn't it?

As said on previous post, no slush, not much snow, so the going was not so bad at all.

We walked from the west dike over to the point and fished that area. After punching several holes we found the perch. The bad part was they would not take our offering.

We fished for about four hours. 1330-1700, Grandson finally caught one perch that I would call less then respectable. I ended the outing with two trout (they weren't so good either. They are swimming still.

Bottom line is good conditions, poor fishing. Folks I talked to out there were doing as good as we did.

Saw an ATV on the ice having no trouble moving around.

Hope that helps.

Yes, the road is still blocked and with the amount of snow piled up it will be that way for quite awhile.

As stated. It is blocked tight as a drum.
