Scofy is a chub laden bust.
#1
Hit the ice at Scofield on Sunday. Arrived to -27 degree temps at the lake at about 8am. Fished between the cabins and the dam in about 15 feet of water. My local gas station was out of minnows which are my go-to bait on Scofield so I tried some meal worms hoping to pull in a chub for bait which worked once and led to catching one snaky 10 inch rainbow. Didnt catch anything else in 4 hours. Lots and lots of light bites and plenty of fish on the finder but not much committing. I think Im going to call Scofield a bust until something is done with all the chubs in there. Each year I go it gets progressively worse and worse with the ratio of chubs to trout leaning way heavily toward the chubs.
At least i got to try out the new auger Santa brought me, that was fun, but I was stupid and didnt check the expiration on my license and got nailed with a $210 ticket for fishing on an expired license. I made sure my kids were updated the night before, thinking I was good til February , but time must have just gotten away from me as my license expired and I paid the price, rightfully so. So that sucked, the fishing sucked, it was cold, I was happy to be out but I can go to strawberry and get skunked by 24"-ers all day. [Tongue]

Well look at it this way time spent with the kids is priceless. I have not fished up there in a very long time.

A friend and I took his boat out this summer and he thought the wife had registered it. found out the hard way as he did not look at the sticker. The guys at Willard asked him to donate to the state fund on that one as well.

Glad to here the new toy worked well for you.

Wow imagine that!! The reports everyone else has given about Scofield being full of chubs have been true!

I would think the only reason a person would go there is to catch plenty of bait for the upcoming year, but I guess I would be wrong.

Great point Majja, it is definitely nice to be out with the kids even if the fishing was slow. The dose of Vitamin D from the sunlight does a lot of good as well.

Yah thanks....call me the eternal optimist. Used to be that the trout were worth the occasional chub, not anymore.

You can always target a few of the chubs to load up on your Cut bait. I am thinking about doing that my self. Heading up with my girls fish are fish to them and bring home some bait for when I go out with the boys for the bigger fish.

I hit it on DEC 19 with a buddy and we iced over 40 skinny cuts with a few 14" bows mixed in but I did manage two 20 inch cuts they were very healthy and fat! I only iced one Chub the three hours I fished. I found that I had much better success finding trout and not chubs when I was fishing shallow. The 20" cuts and 75% of the other fish were caught in 5 ft of water. I fished straight out from the ramp on the other side of the channel. Used Rat finkies tipped with waxies.

were you in 5 ft total or just fishing at 5 ft over deeper water

I was fishing in 5ft total with my jig 8 to 10 inches off bottom but many times they would take it on the drop before I got down that far.

Thanks for the reminder to check my license. I had been planning on hitting the ice on Friday. Turns out my license expires tomorrow. Definitely would have spaced that one.
