It has been many years since I have fished through the ice at Deer Creek....Mainly because I have not seen it frozen over for quite a while. Does anyone know if it has done so this year? If yes, hows the fishing??
Thanks

Driving home from Strawberry on tuesday there were plenty of people on the ice fishing at Deer Creek however there are several areas of open water. Looks like a good place to take a bath if you don't know where you are going and are not careful.

My wife and I fished Deer Creek yesterday from about 12:30 to 4:00. We caught 20 nice Bows, with numerous break offs and fish lost at the hole. Ice was about 6-8 inches...we fished straight out from the parking area, just NW of the island. We were using small ( 1/32 oz) tubes, tipped with a waxie or a mealie. Both worked, with the waxie being more effective. The best color was white...other colors worked as well. But, I believe, the key was Smelly Jelly ( the liquid form, herring scent). We used it liberally whenever we rebaited. The fish hit hard, and fought well. We did not catch ANY perch....where are they?? **CAUTION** THERE IS OPEN WATER TOWARDS THE MIDDLE...BE CAREFUL, AND DON'T VENTURE OUT TOO FAR!!

Is that "pay $" area where you were? Do you just squirt the Smelly Jelly on and hope it sticks to the lure/worm/hook? I used it the other day, anchovy scent, and it smelled like bad cat food![laugh] Guess that's why it works. Bright, glow-in-the-dark green color from HFT in a large squeeze bottle. Am I doing it right?
Oh, yeah, congratulations! 12:30-4:00 is usually my siesta time when fishing. I can't buy a bite then![unsure]

I did not have my depth finder, but I would estimate we were in only 15-20 feet of water. Yes, the area we parked in is a pay area. I have a season pass, so I don't suffer the sticker shock of the one time entry fee.[mad] You know, that Smelly Jelly is great stuff. Even after not re-applying for a while, the scent really sticks on baits.Even the liquid stuff.I just squirt a bit on the jig, and let it run down the whole length of it. I'm heading back in the morning...I'll let ya'll know if we were successful in catching!
