Target perch-no trout
#1
Anyone have ideas on how to target the perch specifically without catching too many trout?
Just not a big trout meat fan. I know Pineview is a good bet, but trying to hit the lakes closer to me(Deer Creek, Jordanelle or Rockport), but all tend to have lots of trout that I'd like to try to avoid. Unrealistic?

Starvation is almost exactly one hour from Heber. A touch less if you have good road conditions and don't get stuck behind the tankers. The Perch fishing there has been really good...if you don't mind weeding through a lot of little guys to get to a few bigger ones. PM me if you would like any more info...not that I am an expert, but I will gladly share what I know.

Well for starters... trout utilize the entire water column from the bottom all the way up to the ice...

Perch stick to the bottom and they won't come up more than a foot or two usually and only to chase food. Therefor if you want to "target" perch... make sure you stick near the bottom. Another hint I can give you... is this.... fish with something pretty heavy.... sounds kind of counter-intuitive for perch but if you can bomb something down to the bottom before the trout notice it that will help. I like using a spoon of some kind, remove the treble hook and attach your line with about a 6" - 8" leader to a small ice jig. This is commonly called a "dropper rig".

There is a lake I perch fish where I see guys using small jigs .... they rarely get the jigs to the bottom in 35 fow before a trout grabs their jig.

OK here you go... haha. Try this jig (see pic) with waxies or spikes on the hook. Also use a perch eyeball, or small piece of perch meat after you catch one. Fish on bottom. Less than a foot off when the bite is slow and up to 4' up when they are feeding. Active jigging calls them in. Jig a bit and then let it sit, you will get a bite within 30 sec if they are there. I fish a hali jig and ice fly up the line on one rod and a swedish pimple in silver or gold on the other rod. I use the pimple to call them in with big jigging action, then when they are there I use the hali jig and ice fly to get them to bite. The flasher is "KEY". You can easily see when a perch is in your zone. If you have one looking at it but not biting, pick your rod up 2-3' and jig short fast actions until you see the fish come up off the bottom to look at your offering.... let it back down a smidge and wait for the light bight. Thats pretty much it. Want to catch perch in Utah? that is how I do it.

The best way to target perch is to go where you would have a greater chance of catching them, such as Hyrum. A friend and I fished for about 3hrs last Sunday and caught plenty. We took home 65 between us. Fished out of the swim beach to the buoy line in 27 FOW, using perch meat for bait, the lure did not seem to make a difference. Good luck and have fun on the ice and at the dinner table!

[#0000FF]In waters inhabited by both trout and perch it is not uncommon for trout to be rooting around near the bottom with perch. They eat a lot of the same stuff and are often caught on the same lures and baits.

But, Murphy was a fisherman. He would tell you that if you want to catch trout...fish for perch...and vice versa.

Go to rockport and fish deep water, the rainbow trout seem to be hanging in the shallows this year. I also heard echo is good for perch. I would not go to pineview for perch.

Good advice. Those tactics work for me frequently as well.
