[#800000]Boating rules/requirements are broken down by boat length categories: 1) Under 16 ft., 2) 16 to less than 26 ft., and 3) 26 ft. and longer.[/#800000]
[#800000] [/#800000]
[#800000]If your boat is UNDER 16 ft., then a Sound Producing Device (a horn OR a whistle) and a Type IV Throwable Floatation Device (PFD)is NOT required, but ‘Strongly Recommended’.[/#800000]
[#800000] [/#800000]
[#800000]Fire extinguishers are required in ALL categories. There is, however, an exception; they are NOT required for outboard motorboats of open construction, but they are recommended for all motorboats. I would think any boat with the floor being the actual hull, such as a Jon boat, would be considered an open construction boat. My 16 ft. Tracker Varga is probably not considered an open construction because it has floor boards with fuel storage, live wells, and storage areas underneath the floor boards. But I’m not a lawyer and have never asked DWR folks for a legal definition about the term ‘open construction’.[/#800000]
