Blue Lake
#1
Fished Blue Lake for a couple hours today. Wanted to get the tube out on the big part but it was too windy. Ended up just fishing the little ponds by the road. Plenty of little tillapia and a couple pretty decent ones. No bass, bluegill, or pacu today. I did the best with a tiny ice jig tipped with worm. Since we are suppose to kill the tillapia anyway, I wish they would let us use it as cut bait elsewhere, but maybe it could transmit something. Somebody please let me know if i'm reading the regs wrong. But the 4-5 inch orange ones can be caught every cast if you let them and would make bait in a hurry. If you go, wear rubber boots and deet.

I always wanted to make a trip out that way, and catch some of exotics, but I fear the car vandalism that I have heard of. Have you had any trouble with vandals? Anyhow, cool looking fish thanks for sharing.

BC, I do a lot of work in that area through the winter, and have never had any trouble. That being said, the reason I didn't fish the main lake is because i didn't want to leave my truck out of sight with my tube in the back. Ive heard enough stories to be nervous. When the scuba classes are out there, they ussually leave someone at there cars.

I think your right, I was told they were just some other kind of tilapia. There are tons of them. Thanks for the info.

i just wish they would let us spear or bowfish for the talapia. Skip the hook altogether.

That woul;d explain them being a bit more worm-eager than the tilapia.

They do.

Quote:Blue Lake, Tooele County
• No limit for pacu or tilapia. Anglers
must not release any pacu or tilapia they catch. All pacu and tilapia must be immediately killed.
• Underwater spearfishing is allowed for pacu, tilapia and carp only.

I also believe you are legally able to use Tilapia, or any other non-Utah game fish as cut bait. You might want to just double check with the DWR, but as long as the Tilapia are dead, you should be just fine to use them as cut bait. Cats would probably love them.

Nope. Here's a condensed version of what the guidebook says.

Quote:Bait
Utah Admin. Rule R657-13-12
While you are fishing, it is unlawful to:
• Use or possess bait in the form of fresh
or frozen fish or fish parts, except as provided below:
• Dead, fresh or frozen saltwater species, including sardines and anchovies, may be used as bait in any water where bait is permitted.
• [red]Dead mountain sucker, white sucker, Utah sucker, redside shiner, speckled dace, mottled sculpin, fathead minnow, Utah chub and common carp may be used as
bait in any water where bait is permitted.[/red]

Tilapia are not on the list anywhere. Cisco can be used only at Bear Lake. White Bass are only legal as bait in Utah Lake or the Jordan River.

Good call. For some reason I was thinking that Tilapia and Pacu were salt water fish.
