Anybody ever shore fished at wahweap?
#1
Hey guys,

I am in Saint George right now and will be at Powell tomorrow and Monday (15th and 16th). Problem is I don't have a boat with me because my boat engine's ECU went out.

I really want to catch some stripers if at all possible because I have my dad, brother, and son with me and their hearts were set on stripers until my boat crapped out.

Does any one know of a good spot in the wahweap/antelope point area that we would have a reasonable chance of catching some stripers? I know I can get smallmouth bass and catfish , but stripers are what we really had our hearts set on, so if anyone has experience with this there and would be willing to share some spots I would be greatfull.

You're best bet is the Chains area, immediately to the left as you cross the bridge over the Dam/Colorado River. Stripers should be running that shoreline as they're attracted to the flow out of the dam. There's also a fishing pier at Wahweap Marina. Should be some cats, bass, etc hanging around there. Good luck!

The chains area.....thanks! Does it require a hike that would be too strenuous for an elderly person? My dad isn't decrepit, but he doesn't quite get along as well as he used to.

As mentioned the area by dam is going to be your best bet, lots of fish down there. It's not too bad of a hike, although you will have to climb over some sand stone - lots of people do it.

I have landed some nice stripers on the mentioned fishing dock as well - first stop after you cross the water line on the dock at Wahweap. I would fish here early morning or night.

Good luck and let us know how your trip goes

Holy cow that was the most insane shore fishing I've ever had! We caught so many stripers from shore that we almost got bored with it. Shallow, deep and in between it didn't really seem to matter. They were everywhere we went. When we tried to just catch smallmouths, we still caught stripers! What a blast!

First day we fished the chains area first with a little success, then we fished to the north of the state line boat rental area, then the fishing dock. We caught non stop stripers the whole time. Next day we started at the fishing dock and only caught three, so decided to go try antelope point Marina. We caught so many stripers that after stopping fishing at 4-4:30, we were cleaning fish until 9:00......the coolers are full!

What a fun trip!

I didn't get too many pics because I was busy reeling fish in, but maybe my son or dad got a few. I did take a pic when we were down to the last 30 fish to clean on the last day over at the fish cleaning station though.

This place is worth visiting again.

Wow nice sized fish too!!! That's great, what did you catch them on? I realize that you have the magic touch and can catch fish out of a bath tub. But that sounds like a crazy good trip. Thanks for the story. Later J

Hehe, thanks!

I caught them on 4" gulp shad minnows and anchovies. The anchovies worked a little better, but both worked great.

Wow nice job catching the stripers from shore. That looks like a pretty serious fillet knife in the holster.

Hehehe......that's my son! He just built that knife and finished it a few day ago. It is seriously like a short sword and reminds me of crocodile Dundee's knife!
