Manila / Flaming Gorge extra long weekend fishing starting June 4.
#1
Early last month I was there, I was catching and eating one spawning trout a day. It seems like that should be easy, but each day something else worked while what worked the previous days didn't work. How do the fish get together to decide these things?

I always like variety and trying and learning new things, so this weekend plus some vacation days, I'll bring a variety of my new different types of fishing rods and reels and tackle to try for the first time as I also target different fish.

Suggestions on targeting different fish in the Flaming Gorge area are invited. I've trolled there with outriggers. But, this time I'll be shore fishing because I'm alone (that is unless my new profile signature is successfulWink

These recent several years, after putting my fly fishing and fly tying away after success and skills with that, I switched to a focus on using big lures and swim bait to target big fish and I've been doing well yet I still have a lot of new lures and entire categories and types to try for the first time along with different new rods and reels.

Those of us in the area are invited to meet up and eat or fish together or both. I'll have Verizon Wireless connectivity to read and post live from my tablet. Excellent weather forecast!

Update: Posting from my tablet while on a brief break from early night fishing Flaming Gorge from shore near Manila. Conditions are brown water with clear water previously visible across and at the opposite shore. Mild wind was towards me earlier and wind is calm now. Perhaps I should have gone to the opposite shore. No visible signs of fish, but perhaps brown trout will cruise the shoreline now that it's dark. I have one rod still fishing with a worm while I cast and retrieve ultralight with a Blue Fox. Considering the murky water, I might switch to something with more rattle or disturbance.

Live update as my worm is wigging 2 feet under a bobber.

Location photographed. (Edit: I just looked close. Those 9 aircraft are actually tiny bugs flying around me as I took the photograph.)

Conditions: zero wind and even calmer. Slightest current away from shore keeps worm out from the point. But, the water is mud colored. I don't know why. It was crystal clear last month and no rough waters since I've been here.

I'm about to change locations. I started early morning before enough light to see how dark the water as my floating Live Target crawfish disappears only three inches under. But, I stayed because I brought a large silvery fish to the surface on a new Blue Fox fishing ultra light with two pound test. Ultra light is new to me, so I likely didn't set the hook even with the rod doubled over.

This trip is not in a rush, so it's a great time to practice with my many new rods and lures. Equipment makes a huge difference! I'm now casting much further with only a rod change.

One lure must have spun and twisted my braid, so I added a swivel. That wasn't quick enough. Perhaps it would have cleared the tangles that form and it seemed to be slowly get better with each cast, but I decided to walk the line out 100 yards and reel it in running through a strip of cloth tied in a knot giving it just the right tension. I did that twice. Once probably would have worked. Now there are no more tangles when casting and I'm using a premium #1 ball bearing swivel, but the lures I'm using aren't spinning anyway.

I'm off to seek clear water. That should make a difference.

Advice is invited. Anyone fishing Flaming Gorge is invited to fish with me.

Update of afternoon fishing:

I moved to Swim Beach. Families were enjoying the beach on this sunny and calm day. I should go swimming tomorrow. I almost did today to retrieve a caught Lucky Craft lure, but my line had more pound test than the tangled line holding it.

This rocky shore (pictured) has very clear water with very big three foot long fat fish cruising the shore. They came by infrequently and I tried a different lure each time swimming it right through their group without them showing the slightest interest.

What will interest them?

Perhaps it was that it was early afternoon, so that might change just before and after sunset. Last night, I night fished very late, but that was before seeking and finding the clear water this afternoon.

I'm eating well instead of fishing late. Perhaps I should try early morning.

I'm having a wonderful vacation!

I'm not going to use my Tuesday night movie tickets -- Sandy IMAX and VIP.

A fiberglass arrow works best on those big carp that swim the shoreline.

Are those carp! I'm glad you told me, so I don't waste time with them.

What fish choices are likely there?

I've had great success catching small mouth bass at East Canyon Reservoir, so I would like to catch and cook one for lunch tomorrow.

How do the big ones know they're in Wyoming?

Where is the closest good big small mouth bass shore fishing to Manila?

I'll try my Live Target crawfish first.

Tiny small mouth bass shore fishing off these rocks (pictured) caught with yellow Live Target crawfish, but as you can see, compared to an actual crawfish there, the green brown is a better match.
