Uinta Mountain Advice for Fishing Merit Badge
#1
Greetings,

I will be camping in the Uinta Mountains later this week with a scout troop and will be staying in the East Fork of the Bear River area. Even though I know that there are small brookies and cutts in the East Fork of the Bear, I have been asked to teach the fishing merit badge and would like to find a lake within a reasonable distance where a dozen scouts could catch a few fish. Do you have any suggestions?

Thanks in advance for your advice!

I would suggest that you haul them over to Whitney Res and there they could catch Tiger trout, Rainbow and an occasional cutthroat trout or brook trout.

Butterfly, Pass and Mirror Lakes are all fairly close to where you will be. They are all located next to the main highway. All of these lakes are stocked with catchable trout on a regular basis.

Whitney resrviour is not too far from there and is frequently stocked with rainbows and also has brookies. If you are interested in doing a hike, one that I took my scouts on last year was to Clyde Lake. You can turn this hike into a 5 to 6 mile loop that passes nearly a dozen lakes that have fish populations in them. There is also a wide variety of species available on this loop (Rainbows, Cuts, Brooks, Tiger and Grayling). If anything the hike will wear them out a little and get them to go to bed at a decent hour[Wink] I have found that getting off the main road even a half a mile makes a big difference in the Unitas.

Good luck, let us know how you do

I am grateful for the responses. I am not familiar with the road to Whitney Reservoir. Is it accessible by passenger car?

Don't forget to do your paperwork so that the boys under 16 yrs of age do not have to buy a fishing license.

There is a clause that allows Scouts and other non-profit groups an exemption while on an organized trip to fish without a license as long as an adult leader is with them and has a license.

The form from the DWR is available at

http://wildlife.utah.gov/fishing/pdf/you...mption.pdf

Fill this out and have it with you.

if you decide to go to Whitney I would make it one of your week day activates as it gets very crowded on the weekends

Many are not aware of the exemption, which is why when ever I think it can be applied I post about it. As we become aware and pass on the knowledge it will become easier for groups to introduce kids to fishing.

So, now that you are aware, please make anyone that could use this aware.

Thank you.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I was able to teach the fishing merit badge and the boys (for the most part) were able to complete the requirements. We caught plenty of small brookies and cutts in the Bear River during the day and we fished Butterfly Lake in the evening (the bows, tigers and brookies were pretty plentiful). Fun times!
