[#800000]While using corn as bait for fish MAY become legal next year in selected waters, please don’t forget that using it to chum with will still be illegal. Here are some rule quotes from the guidebook.[/#800000]
[#800000] [/#800000]
[#800000]1. Chumming is prohibited on all waters except Lake Powell.[/#800000]
[#800000] [/#800000]
[#800000]2. (Lake Powell) Chumming is allowed, but you may chum only with legal baits or dead striped bass, as specified in Utah Admin. Rule R657-13-12.[/#800000]
[#800000] [/#800000]
[#800000]3. Utah Admin. Rule R657-13-12 states that the only legal baits for chumming are dead shad from Lake Powell and dead striped bass from Lake Powell and both may only be used in Lake Powell[/#800000]
[#800000] [/#800000]
[#800000]4. Chumming is prohibited on all waters, except as provided in Section R657-13-20.[/#800000]
[#800000] [/#800000]
[#800000]5. [/#800000][#800000]R657-13-20. Variations to General Provisions.[/#800000][#800000] Variations to season dates, times, daily and possession limits, methods of take, use of a float tube or a boat for fishing, and exceptions to closed areas are specified in the proclamation of the Wildlife Board (Guidebook?) for taking fish and crayfish.[/#800000]
[#800000] [/#800000]
[#800000]Even if you can use it next year, you won’t be able to chum with it unless the Administrative Rules are also changed to allow it’s use as chum.[/#800000]
[#800000] [/#800000]
[#800000]We used some cured and scented (tuna oil/garlic & tuna oil/shrimp) shoe peg corn on the Wyoming side of Flaming Gorge this past summer to great effect on kokanee. Unlike mtncat1’s experience, we found it produced limits quicker than did Berkeley Gulp maggots and the shrimp scent out produced the garlic scent. And using maggots and additional scent products on lures will almost always out produced using lures with no maggots or scent.[/#800000]
[#800000] [/#800000]
[#800000]And using proper equipment and techniques will go a long way towards making any fishing adventure successful regardless of the bait used. Making corn legal for bait in Utah, or not, will not have any impact on my enjoyment of the activity. Tight lines to all y’all.[/#800000]
