Anyone been on Powell recent?
#1
I am heading down to Powell early Friday morning and staying til Sunday. (Bullfrog) Wondering if anyone has been down since it got cold? Planning on Halls Creed Friday, and running to the horn or further up on Sat.
Looking for water temps, and if you had luck jiggin for them?

Thanks in advance!

No, but I'm getting excited about going down in early February again, so I'll be very interested to hear how you did this early in the "season". I've never gone down in December before.

I was at Powell earlier this week, it was hit and miss. When I could find the schools it was game on fish after fish. Sometimes went several hours between finding a school. I was however, down at Wahweap and really wanted to figure that part of lake out in winter.

Anyways water temp was 55 and most of my striper schools were found in 80-90 feet of water, suspended between 30 and 60 feet. When I found a large school they were really just all over the place. Anchovies and silver spoons. Surprisingly I caught none trolling. Get that chum going.

Most of mine seemed to hit better on a light jig head that fluttered down, really got them going. I also caught some just jigging deeper (30-40 feet)

We did alright, cruised up to the horn on Friday morning and landed 37 fish, a few walleye and the rest stripers. Jigging around 55 seemed to be the ticket. Lost a rod bearing on my boat, so had to jump in with my buddy. Sat we caught 45, a few largemouth casting shore, a couple walleye and the rest stripers.

They seemed to like a sporadic motion to the spoons when jigging, slow and steady would catch a few, speed reeling from the bottom would catch a few, high sticking it would catch a few, then the school would be gone.

Not my best trip, but definitely not my worst trip to Powell.

Nice job and thanks for the report. What kind of condition were the fish in, any meat on them? When I was near wahweap I caught some healthy ones but also a lot of skinny fish. Was curious if the fish up north were more healthy.

I didn't keep great count on them, but we only culled maybe 8 snakes, the rest were healthy, good cooking sizes, nothing huge, but they were fat compared to last year at this time.
