Got to Mantua at a civil mid-morning hour. Air temp was 27°, sunny and calm. (Am I SURE this is Mantua?) Ice was a measured 6" and the water was a bit dingy in some spots, clear in others. Tthere were a good number of people on the east side, fewer on the west. I chose to fish the deepest hole on the west side for perch.
Two non-committal bites was all I could scratch up, so I moved back closer to shore where I had spoken with three nice folks from North Salt Lake. They visit this board for the info (Boo!) but promised to start posting soon (Yea!) They had limited out on trout in about 8' of water and were about to leave.
I decided to try their now-vacated holes and got smacked the moment I dropped my jig. 10" planter 'bow I released to propitiate the fish gods. Then a nice 13" dinner trout. A short time went by and then another angler wandered onto the ice. I told him I only wanted one more trout for dinner and then I'd be leaving. No sooner said than whammo! Hard hit. Bendo.
It got a glimpse of me and (doubtless repelled by my face) took off against the drag. Finally, it wrapped itself several times around my transducer cable, which I quickly grabbed and hauled out, trout luckily still attached.
Photo below. It taped at 15 ½" and it awaits our oven as I type. Lure of the day was a white jig with pink soft plastic and a meal worm. Temp had risen to 33° when I left with clouds moving in rapidly.
Officer Barney was busy filling the city coffers, both at the lake and on the streets. Be aware!
