Echo
#1
I drove by Echo yesterday, Thursday, on my way to SLC. There were two tents down by the dam. One small group close to the dam but on east side, very close to where the white ice meets the clear ice. Down off the boat ramp, there were several small groups out about 75 or so yards. Then there was one idiot that was clear across from the boat ramp, around 200 yards or so from the truckers point. When I came home in the afternoon, there was a large open crack just north of where he was sitting! It may have been fine, but it didn't look fine! And he was the only one out that far. I hope he made it back in. So anyway, Echo is now being fished! Now we're looking at one or two feet of snow on top of thin ice, this weekend. That will be fun to deal with!

That idiot sure was catching a bunch of fish on some nice strong ice.

I was out there this afternoon with others. Ice is a solid 4 to 5 inches thick and slick. The snow will be welcome for walking on.

My apologizes to the idiot. After the report the previous day, of someone nearly breaking through, my butt was puckering seeing someone out in the middle like that. It looked pretty spooky from the freeway. Sorry. Didn't mean to insult. Glad you had good success!

It's only stupidity if it doesn't pay off.

I went fishing with "The idiot" today. Smile It was nice other than the cold a** wind. Luckily we were able to put the screws to her and secure the ice tent. Fishing was good and the ice was 5". Very slick on top, crampons or yaktraks recommended. Successful day... included a sled pic, fish cleaning time. Kept 6" and over, threw a bunch back. Count em up...

The Idiot is obviously one heck of a fisherman, and has ice knowledge way past my butt pucker IQ! I appreciate his and your willingness to somewhat overlook my unintended insult. I hope to be down there tomorrow, for some perch. Even though they are small, they still taste a lot better than trout, in my opinion. But then we have pretty much determined what my opinion is worth! [Wink]

I love this thread because it could have gone south very easily. Instead, it was fun to read and learn from. I have been known to put my foot in my mouth more than a time or two.
Echo is on my wish list for destinations this year. Maybe this Friday. . . ?

My wife informs me quite often, that I have stuck my foot in my mouth. I not only have the "Foot in Mouth" disease, I appear to be a carrier! So I always appreciate those that can forgive me of my shortcomings.

This low life will be down there, at some point in the morning. You are welcome to snuggle in and see what I use. It's nothing fancy. I will be the one with my foot in my mouth. I will also have a guy with me that uses a shopping cart for a sled/gear carrier/ balance provider, because he is losing his eye sight.

I'm actually on my way now I decided to try a over night trip! If you can't sleep come on out! Any hints on where to start?

I can tell you, that in my experience, and the experience of others I have fished with, perch pretty much shut down after sundown. You can still catch trout, and when fishing waters with crappie, night time is the best time. I will soon start fishing Pineview for crappie, as soon as the ice is deemed safe. I usually head down around 3 pm and fish until around 11 pm. When the crappie come in, they just about black out my flasher, at times. I'd be glad to share in that experience if you are interested. On Echo you could start straight out from the boat ramp. That is probably about the easiest access point, if you are pulling gear.

Well that is good to know. Maybe its just technique, and I don't have it. I have caught many crappie at night but never perch.
