Flaming gorge question
#1
I ice fished flaming gorge several times and have gotten into lake trout pups every time I've gone, but I don't have any close friends or relatives that know what to look for if you are targeting big lake trout. Would anyone be willing to impart some wisdom? Anything would help thank you!

What part of the reservoir have you mainly been fishing? I personally "cheat" with a vexilar sonar system and locate the monsters anywhere around 85-135 ft. deep. I graph plenty of pups in shallower waters, but as long as your in the right place at the right depth with larger tube jigs (I use Gitzit - white or dark green) at least 3.5 inches MINIMUM, you will eventually land a good one. I'm usualy 1-4 ft. off the bottom when jiggin' til I graph one then stop and pause for a few slight seconds, if there's no hit right away I barely move my jig to show signs of life and they fall for it everytime. Good luck, FISH ON [cool]

I have mostly fished around the confluence area, and Ive got a flasher as well so that's not a problem. But it sounds like I need to find some really deep what the area that i fished last time was about 90 ft deep, is that too shallow for the bigger ones?

Yes you can fish the whole lake just have to buy the stamp. get a map of the lake and look for under water humps in 80 to 100 feet deep.

The stamp cost $10 if you have a Utah fishing license. it is good for all year
this is one place you can buy it.

if it cost more than $10. you are buying the wrong stamp.

Antelope flat is a great place to catch rainbows on the Utah side right now. I haven't heard of any ice forming on Utah side at all yet. Ice prob won't get to Lucerne for at least a few weeks. We are planning a recon trip to try some new spots soon though. I will report back on ice conditions. Happy New Year [cool]

Any news on the ice conditions? Is the burbot bash cancelled?

The Bash is NOT cancelled.

Ice is down to just past Brinegar Ranch and it's 3-4in. Some of the bays south of there are also capped but Anvil is open. Ice gets thicker north of Buckboard (about 5in) and the Confluence (10+in) and Firehole (12+in).

Good luck and stay safe, Ryno

I can tell you a lot better of a spot to catch bows than antalope flats, and not as long of a boat drive to. I don't even need any koke trolling time from ya cause that's what we mainly do.
