Eating Fish from Utah Lake
#21
You're welcome. I never liked Booger Kink anyway, lol!

But seriously, there are more yucky things in ground beef and processed chicken "nuggets" than in any fish we might catch. The whole food contaminant thing is a bit of a sham anyway; to get really sick, you'd have to eat 100 pounds of fish a day - a bit like lab rats that get cancer after being force fed hundreds of times their usual diet amount of...whatever.

If you like fish, go ahead and enjoy them; in moderation, of course. That even goes for fast food - and I ate a Famous Star burger yesterday.

[#0000FF]Not sure how you feel about hot dogs. Here is a LINK to a writeup and video of how they are made.

Had a couple of friends a few years ago who worked in a meat processing plant. They did not last long and would never eat either hamburgers or hot dogs again. Said I didn't wanna know what went into them.

I enjoy the spicy "sausages" sold by Costco as the filler meat in hot dogs. But I never buy any kind of "regular" hot dogs...especially the lowest price store brand stuff. Howsomever...I know that catfish like them. Hmmmm?

Doesn't bother me, Pat. As far as I'm concerned, there are no inedible parts in a cow or a pig. I've enjoyed tripe, chitlins, menudo, pickled pigs' feet, head cheese, BBQed snouts and more.

Did your wife do the dishes just before you cleaned them.

[#0000FF]Me too either. I grew up in an agricultural family...of modest means. I learned to eat and enjoy all the parts of the critters...or go hungry. Those who have seen my ample proportions would not believe I missed many meals.

I have also traveled and dined both in other parts of our country as well as north and south of our borders. Again, what is considered awful offal by most delicate palates is commonly put to good use by others less finicky. And a lot of it is fine fare, even when you know what you are eating.

My point...with the hot dogs...is that there is a lot more to their contents than "meats" the eye. And a lot of squeamish folks would likely give up their all- American fave food if they really knew what was in them.

You and I are a lot alike, Pat. Except, of course, that you're good at catching fish...

[#0000FF]But you gots a purtier boat.

I think we went to different schools together.

Gotta get together on the water again soon. I am looking at Starvation next week. That Hobie would love it over there. You would too if you aren't already well acquainted with it.

[#0000FF]No problem. We have a long summer ahead. Unfortunately it will probably be another power squadron summer. They really killed the good fishing last year. But after Labor Day it comes into its own for both weather and fishing.

Have your peeps contact my peeps whenever you get a hole in your schedule and a hankerin' for fishin' at the same time. Maybe we can put together a mini floatilla over there again. Much fun.

Never had a white bass from UL that tasted like detergent...sure it wasn't from your sink?

The WB I've eaten from there over the last few years taste as good as any other panfish from any other lake around here IMO.

UL looks a little funky, is an urban fishery, and there was a time when it was in pretty poor shape, mostly prior to the clean air and water act and modern regulations. Now, as noted by two other posters, the fish are fine, certainly no worse than anything you buy in the store or eat in a restaurant - and not as bad as some waters, say AF canyon/tibble fork for one. Not sure what your issue is jedidian...many waters in Utah kicking out fish much more polluted than UL.
