I am considering upgrading my fish finder, and one I am looking at has a side looking option for $90 more. I would appreciate comments that anyone has concerning these. How far to the side can one see (realizing that the depth of the water impacts this)? I know that many use these mounted to an electric trolling motor mounted to the bow of the boat; however, on my boat it would be a permanent mount on the stern. Will a side looking option work with the transducer mounted on the stern?
Thanks,

Kent, I have a side finder by Eagle but I'm not sure how far to the side it can see. If it's like most fish finders it depends on how much power it has. I also think they work better in lakes like Willard and Utah lake that are shallow than they do in a lake that is deep like Bear lake. The good thing is, at least for my Eagle, the side finder can be turned off. When I'm on Bear lake I turn the ASP(controls the side finder) off. Mine is also mounted on the stern. WH2

Side finders can be a great thing if you do a lot of casting.
