Taking the Scouts Ice fishing Tomorrow, where to GO?

I've been nominated to help my brother take his scouts ice fishing tomorrow ( barring bad weather.)

We're trying to make this an enjoyable experience as possible since some of the kids have never been Ice fishin or any kind of fishing. The ones that needed them all got licenses today. I have a have few questions that I think will help us determine the best location for these kids.

Where is the best ice fishing action right now?

Has anyone been up to Scofield lately ?

Will the Berry Ice support snowmobiles on the north east side of the main lake ( last turn big off area on the hill, just before heading east toward soldier creek?) How much slush is on the ice on the north east side?

Any new reports from Currant Creek? Also wondering if the road is cleared?

If you want to catch alot of Perch and or Trout goto Rockport. But if you do pick your path onto the ice. There is one soft place on the approach. The Ice is good and the fishing is fantastic.

With a troop full of kids and if the ice is good, Lost Creek will keep them more than busy with planters. A great place to teach kids how to fish!

The biggest problem I think you will have is keeping the lads feet dry. There is a lot of snow and slush every place that the fishing will be good. You could be standing in over 1' of water. If you have access to snow shoes from the Scout Office it would also help keep them drier and give them something else to do when they get cold or bored.I have read a lot of good reports here for tackle and tactics. You may want to go on another day when the conditions are better.

Thanks for all the advise on Rockport. Is there a way to get snowmobiles and sleds out onto the ice? How is the east side access? We have a few tents and other heavy stuff on Sleds. We were planning on some dutch oven cooking. Maybe with all those young legs we could get that stuff down to the ice and back up with out the Snowmobiles?

You probably could get snowmobiles on Rockport on the state park side....but be carefull, only 2/3 of the lake is frozen, so I wouldn't venture out too far. The ice that is there is safe, but use extreme caution if you take out snowmobiles. Not sure about Lost Creek and snowmobiles. Hope you guys have fun.

At the rest stop there is a sign of unsafe ice , but it also a sign of no ATV's but did see a snowmobile cruise on shore and not on the ice this week .

Well, best fishing for novice scouts will be Rockport. Haven't seen many machines on Rockport. Saw an airplane land on the ice last year. That was kind of fun to watch.

Scofield or Strawberry would be the best for snow machines, but the fishing has slowed down quite a bit at Schofield. Haven't been there since the 13th so I dont know how access is at Schofield. Don't have much experience at Strawberry.

Wheeew...., The Scout Ice fishing trip is over!!! As we headed south on I-15 6:30Am Saturday Morning, We were still deciding on were to go? Radio conversations between vehicles debating where to go continued until Utah County. It came down to Scofield or Strawberry? As we hit the Orem exit, My Brother decided to turn off and go to the Berry.
We went to the Marina area and it was almost completely full with vehicles at 7:45 Am. We took the snowmobiles off the trailer and decided to drop off the scouts approx 200 yards southwest from the Marina.( in retrospect a big mistake.) There were a lot of people out on the ice in the general area Saturday morning!!! We were in 26 to 41' of water and we only had one NICE 21" Cutt in 3+hours through the hole. A lot of small bites but with all the novice fisherman, they struggled to hook them. Around 11:00 AM bad weather came in with wind and snow which made for terrible conditions! We decided to load up the bunch and head to Rockport. Arrived Rockport around 1:30PM and found no parking on the west side, so we went to the east side campground and unloaded the Sleds and headed to the East side ice. As we came onto the ice, we decided the ice was too thin on the edge for the Sleds, so we left them on the lake edge. Two guys were just leaving and told us they limited out on trout in just a couple of hours. It was only 8' in depth there. The max depth we found was 10' in the area. We decided to use the exact same holes as the previous fisherman and right off the batt I landed a really nice huge perch, then another within just a few minutes, then a really nice 18" brown. After that the bites just stopped? Around 4 PM , one of the kids finally landed a nice rainbow and we had a few more in just a few minutes. We left just before Dark and while we didn't catch many fish, we all had a great time!!! I did try to call out on channel 12 at both Strawberry and Rockport for other BFT members, but didn't get any response?
