Homemade Power Auger

Just watched a video about a DIY electric auger made with a cheap winch motor.  It strikes me that that wouldn't be hard at all to do.  Maybe even with a starter motor from a small car. 

  Any ideas?  The one snag to me seems that small 12V batteries may not hold the amp-hours needed to push a motor for very long, meaning good for only a couple of holes.

I don't see why it wouldn't work. If you have the parts already and the time to build it, it could work out less than investing in a drill and auger bit.

If you can get some gear reduction going for less amp draw, then your 12v battery will last a bit longer.

One advantage I have is I already own a defunct gas auger with a gearbox. I considered using an engine from one of my bigger old chainsaws, but I don't want to buy a new engine for it.
