I hit Utah lake on the west side at 7:00 am.
I fished until 1:30 pm.
I caught 3 channel cats and 1 mudcat.
The channels were 3.5, 4.5 and 5.5 lbs. They all fought very good, it was a lot of fun in the poontoon. The last one was the biggest, it pulled me around and around before I finally netted it.
The wind blew me north in the morning and then switched to the south about 11.
The heavy grass in the area made it difficult to drift a bait. I caught all of the fish next to the reeds, I tried out deeper in clearer water, but didn't get a bite.
There were two guys just south of me who were wading out waist deep and setting trotlines. I don't know how well they did.

[cool][#0000ff]Glad you got a few. Between those thick weeds and the changing winds it can be tough fishing there sometimes. Definitely more solitude than fishing next to a busy harbor. Right?[/#0000ff]

You are not kidding there.
A couple of times skiers were heading for me, but the skier fell each time before they got too close.
All in all, zero boat traffic.
Quite nice.
Paying attention to your advice and actually getting out there with a line in the water is paying off.

That area is one of my favorites for cats, just because of the solitude. We've never been skunked, even if we were only pulling up mudders, it was still fun. We always fished in about 4ft with no weeds around sometimes it was slow other times we were busy the whole day. I did manage to poke a hole in Uncleray's inflatable on consecutive weekends, but it was still fun.

I did worry about poking a hole in the poontoons. At one point I was going through stuff so thick that I couldn't move, I pulled one of the oars out and used it as a push pole to get through it.
I couldn't row or kick through it, it was shallow enough I could have gotten out and walked, but using the oar to push through worked.

Until we did poke a hole in the boat we never even thought about it, but I just happened to have apatch kit in my tackle box and we were able to keep fishing. Ray has the spots marked and dated in the bottom of his boat.
I've never gotten into the weeds with either the inflatable or my toon, ususally headed out to deeper water, I don't like the bugs.
We use a shrimp tipped with worm and just let it settle on the bottom, seems to work we've caught cats a big as 6lbs and as little as my pinkie, didn't think one that small would hit a large hook but it did! We didn't even know it was on the line until we pulled up shop to move someplace else!

I maybe should have tried some other things, but I just used chunks of minnow under a bobber about 3'.
I can't seem to keep worms at the house, I either freeze them or dry them out, so I just took minnows with me.

Never had any luck with minnows, so I stuck to the thing that works for me. I buy the worms the day before I fishing, keep them in the fridge until the morning I leave, and if I don't use them all, I offer them to the fishies for thanks. I don't have to worry about keeping them and the fishies get a treat. We usually go towards Pelican Point and drive up to the waters edge and launch, usually have to walk out a ways before you can sit in the toon without dragging bottom but the toon has a very shallow draft.

Are you going in at the Pelican Point Marina?
I went down to the marina and fileted the fish the other day. It is a nice area there.
I have tried worms many times, I have caught a few mudcats, but no channels on the worms.
I have had pretty good luck with the minnows rigged on a circle hook, about 3' below a bobber. I have used hooks from 4/0 to #6 and had good hook ups with all of them.
We were going in a little farther south, the turn off from the road is very rough and 4 wheel drive is a plus.

No haven't been there yet, I just head south on Redwood past Saratoga keep going until the fences end and you see some dirt roads heading towards the beaches. I'm heading there tomorrow morning with UncleRay and my daughter. Taking my toon out for the first time this year. We'll be in a white Dodge Ram, see the for sale page. Should be on the water by 7:30 or 8 at the latest. PM if you want to meet up with us.

That sounds like the same place I go, right across the road from the shooting gallery.
The grass is pretty heavy close to shore, it thins out as you get deeper into the lake.
Good luck and have fun.

Well it was across from some shooting gallery but no boat launch or fish cleaning station. It could use a clean-up there were 3 dumped matresses at the waters edge (discusting)

Sorry to hear you didn't catch more fish.
What time did you get on the water?

before 8 AM, but I think we needed to be in deeper water. The one channel I caught was out at least 2-300 yards from shore, I saw a number of fish jumping beyond me, and they looked like channels, based on the color comparison of the fish I took home. Lat time we did really well we were out at least 5-600 yards and in about 5-6 feet of water, today we were in about 4-5 feet and it was the only bites we got.

I'd like to, but I've never had any luck there in warm weather, only when the ice is on! When do you think you'll want to go!

it usually isnt very good when its hot but the air temp has to be cooler up there then down here. fish are deep right now and trolling is prettymuch out of the question, i think jigging is the ticket
