80+ lb Yellowtail, oh yeah!

Just got back from New Zealand where we fished for big yella's. 4 Socal anglers, 2 Aussies and 1 Kiwi. We fished for 5 days living aboard a 56 ft custom made fishing machine skippered by one of NZ's most respected Capt.s and had a ball.

Not only that, we fished like champions tagging and releasing over 100 big yellas during that time. Here are a few pics.

Those kelp paddies will never seem the same off the Socal coast I suspect..

Lou these fish are caught along the Socal coast line in amongst the kelp, plus in other parts of the world where they can grow much much.

When you say what is their proper name, do you mean their genus (species) name? If so, that can be provided.

[]ah don,t need to git specific i guess haha i just wondered if they were related to a tuna. they looked like they had the head of the dolphins as well as a tuna. i,ve seen em fishin o tv. or the tuna. i use to go out for blue fish at hampton beach, new hampshire but that,s all the ocean fishin i,ve ever done. course when younger haha anyways thanks but those are nice fish. must of been fun fightin. and a good time. haha everybodies smilin anyways haha that,s all that matters! haha later take care have fun fishin! [cool]From SoCal to Baja we call 'em Yellowtail AKA forktails AKA forkies. In Oz and NZ they're known as Yellowtail Kingfish AKA Kingfish. Allegedly they are the same species though here we don't usually see them over 40 or 50 pounds with 70 pounders being extraordinary. !00 pounders aren't uncommon Down Under.

They are a member of the Jack family. They are extremely strong & stubborn fighters and use rocks to their advantage when trying to escape.

Excellent eating.

hey there thanks cool! it is good lern bout new spiecies. their good size. i go over to pulaski and catch the king salmon coho and big brown,. we,re plannin a trip this august. can,t wait!!! i rented a cabin for my whole crew. ya know that show mama,s family that,s mine hahaha and their all goin!!! haha god help me !!! haha well, have fun fishin and huntin! mare later[][laugh][cool]

WOWSERS!!! thats a big yellow! over here in socal a big yellow is between 30 and 40#.
