WF 4-5-6 wt Floating fly line choices? Whats best and whats just overpriced?
#21
I agree with SA and Cortland, Orvis has that coating for slickness also. Maybe that is why I haven't heard (or I have heard that after time amoral will crack fly line) But then the line I buy is already treated and requires a once in a while cleaning is all. My Sylk is the only line I have that I have to dress and I use what cortland recommends.

I wouldn't use Armor All either. It supposedly changes the chemistry of the plastics used in fly line. I recall the word was deplasticized.
Dryrod, concerning the quote from the Swedish pro angler, how long does he use a flyline? Does he pay for them or get them free gratis? For 50+ bones a flyline, I use Cortland's fly line cleaner. It's made for it. Save the Armor All for the kickboat toons and my dashboard.
I have heard that 303 Protectant won't harm your line, but better safe than sorry.

[green]Well EvilAsh perhaps like many pros he gets a lot of freebees. Was hunting on line about the use of Armor All on fly lines and came across this site:[/green]

[green]http://www.wildlife.state.nh.us/Fishing/...040303.htm[/green]
[green][/green]
[green]Ten paragraphs down is this quote:[/green]
[green]"Fly lines will be strung out and around the house so I can clean them again (remember, I cleaned them before I stored them last year). Clean the line with mild dish soap and water. Make sure the line is dry before you apply any sort of line dressing -- I use Armor All protectant from the auto-parts store. Spray the dressing onto a towel, starting at the backing; pull the line through the towel while applying pressure. You may need to add more Armor All during this process."[/green]
[green]Still doesn't mean that I will use Armor All on my fly lines.[/green]

Dryrod, I found this. About half way down the answer Simon gives.
http://www.sexyloops.com/manufacturers/rioproducts.shtml

Third one down.
http://www.hansons-outfitters.com/qs/page/524/510/-1

http://www.cs.nmsu.edu/~jcook/ROFF/rodslines.html paragraph about 2/3ds down.

There are others if you google it, that swear by it. These are mostly individuals not manufactures. I guess anyone can use what they want too, but I'd rather use what is recommended for the line. Mostly todays lines with special finishes need just soap and water to clean them.

I did find and have heard positive results on a product called Zip Cast.
http://www.zipcast.net/ If any of you seriously build fly rods or any fishing rod, you'll know who Tom Kirkman is (http://www.rodbuilding.org/list.php?2. )He's the one that developed this product.

Scruffy_Fly, no one is editing. For some reason when you "QUOTE" it's not printing replys. It's doing it to me also.
I am just copy and pasting now.

DryRod,
All of a sudden whenever made a reply by quoting a responder what I had typed as my response disappeared. I presumed that one of you moderators (you and FlyGoddess being the only ones I was aware of) was deleting the stuff. FlyGoddess said it was happening to her, too, when she quoted a previous responder.

I see now my responses are all now back to showing. .....

I guess whatever the problem was has been fixed.

[green][cool]Scuffy_Fly now that you mentioned it I saw a few of your posts which contained a quote but no reply. Had wondered why? But figured what ever your reason was it wasn't hurting anything. Guess that I shouldn't have ass-u-me-d that you had a reason versus something had gone astray. [blush]Sorry that I didn't inquire.[/green]

[#008000][cool]After having some discussion about Armor All and other products used to clean one's fly line I decided to e-mail Scientific Anglers and get their expertise on this subject. Well after a few days of no response I was very surprised when I received a big envelope from subject company. They sent me one of their bulletins " Care & Maintenance of Fly Lines", two different catalogs and several coupons for a variety of 3M products. A class act to say the least. Their recommendation is to use only a silicone based dressing and avoid contact with any solvent based chemicals as well as items such as insect repellant with Deet and sunscreens. Amen.[/#008000]

Quote:...What do you use in the 4-5-6 wt range in wf floating line?...
For a moderate priced line I like the SA lines: nice hard finish, good core, adequate geometry. Cortland and Rio are other nice brands (in general). When I get a bit flushed, I like to spend a couple of extra bucks and get Wulff Triangle Taper. I prefer their geometry, especially for my 4wt Trout fishing. It just works well with my cast.

As for cleaning and dressing, most modern fly lines when used in temperate fresh water just need the occasional cleaning with a bit of soap (mild dish detergent is fine) and water, and lots of fresh water rinse to keep the pond scum at bay. I like to dress the line with a "proper" brand of fly line dressing like Umpqua or SA. I can't say that I'm a fan of Armor-All. I've always thought it was bit of a solvent on the fly line, and it certainly seems to leave a "slick" on the water, even after polishing the line several times with a clean cloth.
