I decided to give the Tigers a rest up at Pineview this weekend. Packed up my gear and headed north on 5/26 not sure where I was going to fish. I made it to Willard and decided to try for some Walleye. After about and hour of fishing and the only thing I caught was a snagged carp I decided to get out of there. Them damn blood sucking flys where driving me nutts. I remembered very quickly why I never fish there in the summer, to many damn bugs[mad]
I packed up my stuck and decided to head up to Newton. I had been hearing rumors the Tigers are around 3 feet since the draw down a few years back. I have not fished Newton in about 6 years but thought it would be a change to visit the lake again. I started fishing around 5pm and fished until dark. The water was right around 65 degrees and the lake is plum full. I ended up catching 6 Tigers before dark. No monsters but some of them are around the 36" mark. Did not measure any but a few were right around there. Sunday morning I started fishing at first light until 2pm and ended up catching 8 Tigers for the day[] I missed or lost more than I caught. It was fairly fast action both days.
I will say this the Tigers up there fight twice as hard as the ones in Pineview!!! I am not sure why but they are a blast to fight up there. On 3 occassions over the last two days I had them jump a good clean 3 feet out of the water slamming my lure. Its a hoot to see those guys launch out of the water like a rocket. Many of the others would taildance during the fight. Its much more of a specticle than Pineview Tigers.
I do have a few complaints about the trip!!! Why on Gods green earth do they allow water skiing on that narrow little lake??? If there was ever a lake that needs to be completely no wake or have horse power restrictions it would be this lake. All it takes is one boat flying down the lake only to hit the other end in 30 seconds to cause a ruckass and your boat rocking in waves!!! Or they just sit there and go in circles making it miserable for anybody trying to fish!!! It sucks but if you can deal with it the fishing is great at Newton.
Second gripe! What is the deal with the Sportsmans Wharehouse in Ogden? Every time I go there it is clean out of Rapalas!!! You would think they would order more and always have them in stock. It looks like people are buying them would it not be in there best interest to keep the shelves stocked??? Last time I ever go there to get lures. It happens every time. I have the logic if I am heading north I will just stop in there to restock. Nope, every time they are out and I am screwed[mad] Ok I will stop now just had to vent!!!
