Rexburg Nature Pond Report
#1
My son and I fished Rexburg last night and the action was fast and furious for trout and perch. Jigging two or three times and then dead poling it seemed to work the best with a variety of colors with worms or mealys. The ice is not safe in a few locations, as I went through; that is what is nice about Rexburg, 4ft deep. I wish Windriver had less tournaments to go to; he usually checks the ice first at this place.[Wink] I did find some safe ice 2.5 inches and a good route to go on. The ice will thicken in the next couple of days. If you take a little one put on a life jacket on them. There were several children's foot prints and bike tracks on the ice; if parents knew how thin it was they would think twice. Please test the ice, and just don't go by my word that it is OK to fish.

Thanks for the report. If you call 2.5 inches of ice "safe" you are as crazy as I am. [crazy]

You are correct. I have been too busy to check the ice, but thank you for checking it for me. Saved me from a cold bath. [Wink] The nature pond is a wonderful place for kids to ice fish after there is safe ice. Maybe this weekend will be good.

Thanks for the report.

Thanks for the report.
Where on the ponds did you get into the perch? I fish there when I get time between classes, but I get bored catching the little planter rainbows. I've only caught one perch there. (I caught about an eight inch goldfish once, that was different!)
Any advice would be appreciated.

Bryan,

I have been fishing right in the middle of the largest pond. I usually fish closer to the parking lot, but again the ice is not safe in this location. I have been fishing right off the small point with the thick willows. I have caught more perch this winter than previous ones at Rexburg. I usually average one per two hours of fishng using small green jigs, but I have caught 7 and 9 my last two trips. When I have caught one I usually catch a couple more immediatly after. These perch are really small (3') with little meat. I think, however, Everet14 pulled out a really nice perch a few years ago. I will mention I used a lantern last night for 45 minutes and still managed to ice a few trout. I am jealous of the gold fish; it forever eludes me. My son has caught one, I am sure Windriver has caught a few. I think I had a flash of orange last night, but missed it[mad] I like this little pond to fish at; a very unique atmosphere. Heck, I can even get my daughter there to fish every once and a while. I agree with Windriver this is a great training area for younger ice fishermen.

Hey thanks for the advice, I'll give it a shot when the ice gets a little thicker.
Thanks again

Ya I have caught one decent perch there and every once and a while you will catch a better trout (15 inches or so) but for the most part its dinks.

I have caught the elusive gold fish. It is funny how it ranks up there in my cool species caught even though I have fished all over the country. That 10-12" gold fish was awesome. My son thought it was really cool also.

I haven't seen the number of gold fish in there that I saw in the past.

Anyone else with gold fish info?

I will have to look for my picture.

no good goldfish stories, but I did watch a guy swallow one and then spit it back up still alive. Explain that Physiology! Finals are over, life is bearable again[crazy], and the first thing I did was pass over to the nature pond, (well after talking to my wife of course)[Wink]. The ice appears to be plenty thick in some spots. I went out to the previous holes drilled of of the willows in the south pond and couldn't stomp all the way through the ice in those holes. Goldfishy here I come!!....[cool]

Tons of fun today! My three year old had two fish pulled in before I could even get the second pole in the water! 10, 10" rainbows and 1 perch in under 30 minutes...
Good fun for a dad and his little girl.
