A carp?
#1
[green][cool]Went to a local regional park to wet a line. Water was so stained that visibility was about 6 to 8". Since I didnt see any surface feeding decided to do some nymphing. While swatting patterns of the lake a good size fish broke the surface in front of some reeds to my right. This trashing continued back and forth within 10-15' away. Then right below my feet and I was surprise to see that it was a carp. Didn't know that these lakes [4 in the park] contained any carps. Tried a variety of flies but really I have no idea what kind might attract a carp. Any body have any thoughts on this?[Image: fish-on.gif][/green]

[cool][green]How do I mount a spear gun on my swatter? And if I miss the damn thing it would probably shoot it back at me. I estimate that he was at least 30" long. BTW I'm sure that it would have made mince meat of my 6X tippet.[pirate][/green]

he'd have to triple over your 6x tippet to make a decent piece of floss for his teeth.. [laugh]...

hehehe your comment reminds me of why I dont carry a gun .. it would be my luck that if I pointed it at someone they would take it away and hurt me with it.. [sly]

I think carp would chomp about any fly, but the presentation is the most essential part.

Here's a link to a thread with on the Utah Boards with the same question and more informed answers than I could provide.[cool]

It is not any 5 or 6 x tippet you are to use either.

I think it is 3x or 2x but not sure on that.

[cool][green]Oh I know that one wouldn't be using 6X for carp. As I mentioned I never expected to see any carp in these lakes. I was fishing for trout - probably in the 14" range. I wasn't about to change my setup with this dude swimming around my feet. I would have had to return to my car and who knows where it would have moved onto by the time I returned. BTW I wasn't wading as it is prohibited in most regional parks.[/green]

[cool][green]Yorba Regional Park located just off the Santa Ana River. BTW this carp was hanging around the shore line. Actually there is a small wall surrounding the lake. The top of the wall is level with grass & the water at the wall is maybe 18" deep. So there was very little casting involved. I did side arm cast in front of some reeds where the carp was thrashing around then it would come back along the wall. Only saw it one time as the water was very stained. Don't know if it was ill as that activity seemed rather unusual.[/green]

several years ago I was on a local lake trying to coerce a few trout to take my bait.. the water was clear near the shorline so I was able to see the trout easily... out of the corner of my eye I saw some movement in the water.. I turned and saw a huge cat fish ambling along.. as I watched this cat kept going into shallower water till it almost grounded itself on the shoreline.. then it just sat there and slowly turned over onto its back.. it scared the pedaddle out of me how it moved in and just seemed to ground itself into the shoreline.... then it turned back over and swam away a few feet.. and then did it all again.. it was this time I noticed a lot of spots all over its skin.. looked almost like mold... all up and down its body... the last time it turned over it was not able to right itself.. it was later that I found out that the "mold" was probably from people mishandling it and wiped the protective slime off of its skin... it was kind of Sad to see ...

Maybe it was trying to loosen it's eggs or something.
As far as flies for Carp, not sure about the other two you mention Mac, but the ones I mentioned have worked for me and are in a book called CARP FISHING, that is why I tried them (plus I already had them)
Dryrod, they sound like GRASS CARP. A little tougher to catch because of the grass. Try a POPCORN or a CORN CLUSTER fly. Cotton seed fly would probably work great also.

I was just thinking of the floating qualities of the two flies I mentioned.. especially the booby.. in that shallow of water.. sinking line with a short leader/tippet it should float at or near the surface.. I like the idea of the cotton seed or the corn fly though.. :-)

on the catfish.. I think it was on its last legs.. it was not moving or trying to turn again.. so I think it went to fishy heaven before I left that area..

Go for the popcorn or bread fly that the Goddess lady makes. You will also do well with a small kernel of corn on a #16 mosquito hook.[cool]

Just remember!

Pointed objects and floatation devices don't mix.[pirate]
